TYWLS/RHYTHM & VOICE AND MINI CAMPS: WMRC PROVIDED A FREE SCHOOL-BASED PROGRAM FOR GIRLS AND GENDER EXPANSIVE YOUTH IN GRADES SIX THROUGH 12 AT THE YOUNG WOMEN'S LEADERSHIP SCHOOLS OF THE BRONX, BROOKLYN, AND QUEENS. STUDENTS COLLABORATED ON ORIGINAL GROUP COMPOSITIONS, STUDIED VOCALS AND PERCUSSION, AND EXPLORED HOW WOMEN AND OTHER GROUPS HAVE USED MUSIC TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES AND RESIST OPPRESSION. AFTER-SCHOOL SESSIONS, MINI CARNIVAL-STYLE ROCK CAMPS, AND PERFORMANCES WERE HELD THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR.

PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT WORKSHOPS: WILLIE MAE ROCK CAMP HELD SONGWRITING AND PERCUSSION-BASED WORKSHOPS THROUGHOUT NEW YORK CITY THROUGH PARTNERSHIPS WITH GROUPS INCLUDING THE BROOKLYN MUSEUM, THE BROOKLYN CHILDREN'S MUSEUM, THE NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY, AND THE BROOKLYN PUBLIC LIBRARY, SMART, AND PS 333. WORKSHOPS INCLUDED SPEAK UP, SEEING SOUNDS, ZINE-MAKING, AND SONGS AS RESISTANCE AND SELF EXPRESSION.

FLATLANDS FAMILY RESIDENCE/RHYTHM & VOICE: WILLIE MAE ROCK CAMP PARTNERED WITH THE NYC DEPARTMENT OF HOMES SERVICES TO PROVIDE RHYTHM & VOICE, A FREE MUSIC AND MENTORING PROGRAM, TO HOMELESS YOUTH BETWEEN THE AGES 8-14 AT THE FLATLANDS FAMILY RESIDENCE IN CANARSIE, BROOKLYN. WORKING IN WEEKLY MEETINGS WITH LEAD WMRC TEACHING ARTISTS, PARTICIPANTS LEARNED AND PRACTICED HANDS-ON PERCUSSION, VOCAL, SONGWRITING, AND DIGITAL MUSIC PRODUCTION TECHNIQUES TO EXPLORE AND CREATE ORIGINAL MUSIC. PARTICIPANTS ALSO LEARNED MOVEMENT, DJING, AND DIGITAL MUSIC PRODUCTION. A SERIES OF GUEST ARTISTS GAVE PERFORMANCES AND HELD MINI-WORKSHOPS.
