CHANGING EXHIBITIONS JULY 1, 2019 THROUGH JUNE 30, 2020SCULPTURE @ LIM - MAY 15, 2019 THROUGH MAY 15, 2022: IN 2019, LIM HAD THREE WORKS BY BROOKLYN SCULPTOR, HOWARD KALISH, AND THREE WORKS FROM THE WATER MILL SCULPTOR HANS VAN DE BOVENKAMP, INSTALLED ON OUR MUSEUM GROUNDS. ORIGINALLY PLANNED TO BE DISPLAYED FOR ONE YEAR, THE SCULPTURES WILL REMAIN ON THE GROUNDS UNTIL SPRING 2022.GRACEFULLY CHIC: THE FASHIONS OF PHILIP HULITAR - JULY 26, 2019 THROUGH OCTOBER 20, 2019: ORGANIZED BY THE LONG ISLAND MUSEUM, THIS EXHIBITION INCLUDED CLOSE TO 130 OBJECTS, DRESSES, AND PHOTOGRAPHS, ON LOAN FROM THE PHILADELPHIA MUSEUM OF ART, THE MUSEUM OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK, AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS. AS A FASHION DESIGNER, PHILIP HULITAR COMBINED FINE TAILORING, EXQUISITE COLOR SENSE, AND A FIRMLY UNAPOLOGETIC BELIEF THAT HIS CUSTOMER'S BEST, MOST NATURAL DRESS CARRIED A "GRACEFULLY" FEMININE SILHOUETTE, NOT A GIMMICKY LOOK CONTRIVED FOR SHOCK VALUE. "I STRIVE FOR HARMONY OF LINE, COLOR AND TEXTURE," HE ONCE SAID, ADDING THAT "THERE ARE NO FREAK DESIGNS FOR PUBLICITY VALUE IN MY COLLECTIONS." FROM 1949, WHEN HE LAUNCHED HIS LABEL, UNTIL HIS RETIREMENT IN 1964, HULITAR SUCCEEDED IN THE HIGHLY COMPETITIVE POSTWAR AMERICAN FASHION MARKET, WITH CUSTOMERS PURSUING HIS EVENING DRESSES FROM BOTH READY-TO-WEAR DEPARTMENT STORE RACKS AND THE RAREFIED WORLD OF HIS CUSTOM COUTURE FITTING ROOM. HE DESIGNED CLOTHING TO BE WORN AT SUMMER CHARITY GALAS, DEBUTANTE BALLS, RESORT PARTIES, NIGHTS ON THE TOWN. ALTHOUGH FAMOUS ACTRESSES SUCH AS JOAN FONTAINE, ROSEMARY CLOONEY, AND JANE FONDA WORE HIS DESIGNS, HIS MOST LOYAL CUSTOMER BASE WERE MIDDLE-CLASS WOMEN WHO SNAPPED UP HIS CREATIONS FROM DEPARTMENT STORES ACROSS THE NATION. NEIMAN MARCUS, OF DALLAS, THE J.L. HUDSON COMPANY, OF DETROIT, BEST'S APPAREL, OF SEATTLE, AND EVEN BERGDORF-GOODMAN, IN NEW YORK - WHERE HULITAR HAD STARTED HIS CAREER - ALL CARRIED HIS CLOTHING. HIS COLORFUL CHIFFON SKIRTS WITH MASTERFULLY EMBELLISHED BODICES SEEMED A PERFECT MATCH FOR AN AMERICA THAT STILL PRIORITIZED DRESSING UP FOR EVENING SOCIAL EVENTS AND HAD THE SEXUAL REVOLUTION IN ITS FUTURE.AT A RELATIVELY YOUTHFUL 59 YEARS OF AGE, HULITAR WALKED AWAY FROM THE FASHION INDUSTRY, MOVING WITH HIS FAMILY TO PALM BEACH, FLORIDA, WHERE HE PURSUED PASSIONS IN INTERIOR DESIGN, ART, AND PHILANTHROPY. TODAY, HIS CLOTHES SEEM A MARKED CONTRAST WITH AMERICAN FASHION DESIGNERS OF THE NEXT GENERATION: HALSTON, BILL BLASS, BONNIE CASHIN, AND RALPH LAUREN. BUT THIS EXHIBITION APPRECIATED AND APPROACHED HULITAR'S CREATIONS NOT AS SPECIMENS IN A TIME CAPSULE BUT FOR THE UNIQUE AND BEAUTIFUL STYLE THEY ACHIEVED IN THEIR ERA.FOUND@LIM: LONG ISLAND'S UNIDENTIFIED PHOTOGRAPHS - SEPTEMBER 13 - DECEMBER 29, 2019: THIS EXHIBITION INCLUDED CLOSE TO 200 PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE LIM COLLECTION. NEARLY EVERY COLLECTION OF PHOTOGRAPHS CONTAINS UNIDENTIFIED IMAGES. THIS ANONYMITY HAPPENS WHEN INITIAL OWNERS DON'T LABEL PHOTOGRAPHS, OR SUBSEQUENT OWNERS FORGET VITAL INFORMATION OR DON'T RECORD IT. AND WITHOUT IDENTITIES, ENTIRE ALBUMS AND BOXES OF ANONYMOUS PHOTOGRAPHS WIND UP AT YARD SALES, ANTIQUES SHOPS, FLEA MARKETS AND ONLINE MARKETPLACES. FOR THEIR PART, MUSEUMS OFTEN ACQUIRE ANONYMOUS IMAGES AS PART OF LARGER DONATED OR PURCHASED COLLECTIONS. AND SOMETIMES MUSEUM RECORD KEEPING - ESPECIALLY IN DECADES PAST - DOESN'T RETAIN INFORMATION ABOUT PHOTOGRAPHS KNOWN AT THE TIME OF ACQUISITION. FOUND@LIM WAS AN OPPORTUNITY TO LOOK AT ORPHANED IMAGES FOR WHICH FEW, IF ANY DETAILS WERE KNOWN. BECAUSE OF THIS STATUS, THEY'RE OFTEN PASSED OVER FOR EXHIBITIONS AND RARELY ATTRACT THE INTEREST OF RESEARCHERS. BUT FOUND PHOTOGRAPHS ARE A SOURCE OF INSPIRATION FOR ARTISTS, ARE SOUGHT BY COLLECTORS FOR THEIR INTERESTING COMPOSITIONS AND SUBJECT MATTER, AND INVITE AUDIENCES TO TRY AND GUESS THE TANTALIZING STORIES BEHIND THE PHOTOGRAPHER AND THE SUBJECT. HOOKED AT LIM - SEPTEMBER 15, 2019 TREE DEDICATION: THIS CURATORIAL PROJECT WAS A CROCHET-WRAPPED TREE DESIGN BY ARTIST CAROL HUMMEL. IN THE SUMMER OF 2019, WORKING WITH A TOTAL OF 41 LOCAL VOLUNTEERS OF ALL AGES AND LEVELS OF CROCHETING EXPERIENCE, OHIO-BASED ARTIST CAROL HUMMEL AND HER DAUGHTER MOLLY SEDENSKY WORKED WITH THE MUSEUM TO COMPLETE THIS BEAUTIFUL DESIGN. HUMMEL'S BEAUTIFULLY UNIQUE AND EXQUISITELY COLORFUL TEXTILE INSTALLATIONS HAVE GRACED TREES AND INFRASTRUCTURE ALL OVER THE WORLD.SEEN AND UNSEEN: PHOTOGRAPHS BY IMOGEN CUNNINGHAM - OCTOBER 18, 2019 THROUGH DECEMBER 29, 2019: IMOGEN CUNNINGHAM (1883-1976) WAS ONE OF THE 20TH CENTURY'S MOST INFLUENTIAL AND UNIQUE PHOTOGRAPHERS. ALONG WITH ANSEL ADAMS, HENRY SWIFT AND EDWARD WESTON, CUNNINGHAM WAS A MEMBER OF THE 1930S ERA GROUP F.64, NAMED FOR A SMALL SPACE ON A LARGE FORMAT CAMERA. THE GROUNDBREAKING COLLECTIVE CHAMPIONED A STYLE BUILT ON CLEAR FOCUS AND SHARP DETAIL. FROM HER EXPERIMENTAL AND COLLABORATIVE PORTRAITS OF ARTISTS MAN RAY AND FRIDA KAHLO, TO CELEBRITY IMAGES OF HOLLYWOOD STARS LIKE CARY GRANT, TO STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL BOTANICAL STUDIES, CUNNINGHAM IMBUED HER WORK WITH EXTRAORDINARY LEVELS OF TECHNICAL SKILL AND ARTISTIC INVENTIVENESS. THIS EXHIBITION, ORGANIZED BY THE IMOGEN CUNNINGHAM TRUST IN ASSOCIATION WITH PHOTOGRAPHIC TRAVELING EXHIBITIONS, FEATURED 60 SILVER GELATIN PRINTS, INCLUDING PHOTOGRAPHS PRINTED BY RONDAL PARTRIDGE (1917-2015), IMOGEN CUNNINGHAM'S SON.THROUGH OUR EYES - NOVEMBER 14, 2019 THROUGH DECEMBER 1, 2019: IN HONOR OF NATIONAL ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE AWARENESS MONTH AND FAMILY CAREGIVERS MONTH, THE LONG ISLAND MUSEUM WAS HONORED TO SERVE AS A SHOWCASE FOR THE SEVENTH ANNUAL THROUGH OUR EYES EXHIBITION. THAT EXHIBITION FEATURED WORKS BY PARTICIPANTS IN DAY HAVEN'S ADULT DAY SERVICES PROGRAM. PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAITS AND ARTIST STATEMENTS WILL BE PRESENTED BESIDE EACH ARTWORK TO PROVIDE A RICHER CONTEXT AND A DEEPER CONNECTION WITH BOTH THE PIECE AND ARTIST.TIMESLIPS STORIES CREATED BY DAY HAVEN RONKONKOMA PARTICIPANTS DURING VISITS TO THE MUSEUM GALLERIES WERE DEBUTED. TIMESLIPS IS A STORYTELLING METHOD THAT IS BASED ON SHIFTING THE EMPHASIS FROM MEMORY TO IMAGINATION. COLORS OF LONG ISLAND - FEBRUARY 21, 2020 THROUGH MARCH 13, 2020: THE LONG ISLAND MUSEUM WAS PROUD TO PRESENT ITS 22ND ANNUAL STUDENT ART EXHIBITION, COLORS OF LONG ISLAND: STUDENT EXPRESSIONS OPENING TO THE PUBLIC ON FEBRUARY 21, 2020. THE EXHIBITION AFFORDED AN OPPORTUNITY FOR HUNDREDS OF STUDENTS FROM ACROSS LONG ISLAND TO DISPLAY THEIR ARTWORK IN A MUSEUM SETTING.ART TEACHERS FROM PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SCHOOLS ACROSS LONG ISLAND IN GRADES KINDERGARTEN THROUGH 12TH GRADE WERE INVITED TO SUBMIT UP TO TWO PIECES OF STUDENT ARTWORK FOR THE EXHIBITION. TRADITIONALLY, THE THEME, "COLORS OF LONG ISLAND," ALLOWS FOR MANY CREATIVE INTERPRETATIONS. WHILE SOME STUDENTS REFER TO LONG ISLAND'S LANDSCAPES, OTHERS PREFER TO FOCUS ON THE CULTURAL DIVERSITY THAT MAKES LONG ISLAND SO BEAUTIFUL. THE VARYING INTERPRETATIONS OF THIS THEME WILL BE PORTRAYED THROUGH A SELECTION OF MEDIA, INCLUDING WATERCOLOR, SCULPTURE, PENCIL, INK, OIL PASTEL, PHOTOGRAPHS AND COMPUTER GRAPHICS.OFF THE RACK: BUILDING AND PRESERVING LIM'S ART TREASURES - FEBRUARY 22, 2020 THROUGH DECEMBER 1, 2020: OFF THE RACK: BUILDING AND PRESERVING LIM'S ART TREASURES WAS ON VIEW IN THE MAIN GALLERY OF THE ART MUSEUM STARTING FEBRUARY 22, 2020 (THE EXHIBITION WAS INTERRUPTED BY THE COVID PANDEMIC SHUTDOWN, FROM MARCH 13 UNTIL SEPTEMBER 5). THE MUSEUM'S ART COLLECTION, CONSISTING OF MORE THAN 500 PAINTINGS AND 2,000 WORKS ON PAPER, IS WHAT MAKES IT POSSIBLE FOR IT TO OFFER A DYNAMIC SCHEDULE OF EXHIBITIONS EACH YEAR. BUT MUCH OF THIS COLLECTION USUALLY STAYS OUT OF VISITOR'S SIGHT, IN CAREFULLY PROTECTED STORAGE SPACES. THIS EXHIBITION ALLOWED US TO PUSH OPEN THE DOORS AND EMPTY OUR STORAGE AREAS, TO GIVE VISITORS A RARE CHANCE TO SEE SOME OF THE RARE AND OUTSTANDING HIGHLIGHTS OF LIM'S COLLECTION. THE MUSEUM WAS RECENTLY AWARDED A NEW YORK STATE COUNCIL FOR THE ARTS FACILITIES CAPITAL EQUIPMENT GRANT TO STRENGTHEN AND ENLARGE ITS CAPACITY TO HOUSE ITS EXISTING COLLECTION AND TO ADD NEW ART. OFF THE RACK BOTH HIGHLIGHTED SOME OF THE OUTSTANDING NEW PAINTINGS THAT LIM HAS COLLECTED OVER THE PAST 20 YEARS WORKS FROM JANE WILSON, JANE FREILICHER, DAVID BURLIUK, ROBERT DASH, AND MANY MORE AND EXAMINED THE MUSEUM'S CONTINUING EFFORTS TO CARE FOR ITS COLLECTION. THE MUSEUM TAKES THE PUBLIC RESPONSIBILITY ASPECT OF CARING FOR AND ADDING TO ITS COLLECTIONS SERIOUSLY, AND THIS PROJECT WAS A CORNERSTONE OF SUSTAINING THAT CONCERN AND EFFORT.

EDUCATION PROGRAMS ARE DEVELOPED AND TAUGHT BY A STAFF OF MUSEUM EDUCATORS, WORKING IN CLOSE COLLABORATION WITH TEACHERS AND SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS TO ENSURE THAT THE PROGRAMS SUPPORT NEW YORK STATE AND NATIONAL LEARNING STANDARDS IN SOCIAL STUDIES, ART AND LANGUAGE ARTS. ADDITIONALLY, 144 CHILDREN AND ADULTS FROM HOMESCHOOLS WERE ALSO SERVED. THE MUSEUM'S APPROACH IS TO TEACH LEARNING THROUGH OBJECTS; TRAINING STUDENTS IN THE PROCESSES OF INQUIRY AND THINKING RATHER THAN IN THE ACCUMULATION OF PARTICULAR SKILLS. STUDENTS EXAMINE DOCUMENTS, ARTWORK, VEHICLES, COSTUMES AND RELATED OBJECTS TO LEARN ABOUT THE TIME IN WHICH THEY WERE CREATED AND THE PEOPLE WHO MADE AND USED THEM.THE FOLLOWING ARE EXAMPLES OF CLASSES FROM THE SCHOOL PROGRAM.
