The mission of Chiku Awali is to promote and encourage cultural programs and activities that are representative of African dance, music, and culture. It seeks to culturally enrich and enlighten people, particularly youth, of the richness of African and African Diaspora cultures.
Conducted African dance and drumming classes for 40 weeks during the year for 45 students ranging in age from four to sixty-four. This consisted of three dance classes and two drumming classes per week. Produced the annual African Dance Extravaganza where the community participates in the annual show and class members of Chiku Awali performed several African dances and drumming pieces. Chiku Awali performed in the community for schools, churches, and various civic organizations on 24 separate occasions.
Conducted 30 cultural enrichment and leadership activities and workshops for 30 young people during the year. Workshops were given in team-building, marriage and family, home ownership, finances, conflict reduction, dressing for success, getting prepared and accepted for college and public speaking. Students participated in STEM activities, cooking, reading, playing games during the monthly Excellence Club meetings.
As part of the Dance and Life Skills programs, field trips were taken to the musical The Temptations with 15 community residents, to the Museum of the City of New York with 28 residents, and the New Victory Theater for Aesops Fables with 38 residents.
