INTERPRETER REFERRAL - THE MAJORIE CLERE INTERPRETER REFERRAL SERVICE (MCIRS) IS UNDER THE DIRECTION OF A NATIONALLY CERTIFIED INTERPRETER WHO COORDINATES THE PROVISION OF HIGHLY SKILLED AND CERTIFIED SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETERS FOR A 13 COUNTY AREA ACROSS CENTRAL NEW YORK. A FULL RANGE OF LANGUAGE PREFERENCES ARE PROVIDED BY PROFESSIONAL INTERPRETERS, INCLUDING AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE (ASL), SIGNED ENGLISH, GRASSROOTS (MINIMAL LANGUAGE SYSTEM), ORAL AND TACTILE (DEAF/BLIND) SIGNING. TYPICAL ASSIGNMENT SITES INCLUDE: COLLEGE (ALL LEVELS OF STUDY), MEDICAL, SEMINARS, CONFERENCES, ARTISTIC PERFORMANCES (CONCERTS/PLAYS), LEGAL, AND POLITICAL FORUMS.
VISION REHABILITATION - INSTRUCTION AND GUIDANCE IN THE SKILLS NEEDED FOR INDEPENDENT LIVING IN AREAS OF PERSONAL MANAGEMENT, HOUSEHOLD MANAGEMENT, COMMUNICATION, EDUCATION, LEISURE ACTIVITIES, ORIENTATION AND MOVEMENT IN THE INDOOR ENVIRONMENT, AND USE OF LOW VISION DEVICES AND TRAINING TECHNIQUES; INCLUDING THE ACQUISITION OF ADAPTIVE EQUIPMENT. INSTRUCTION HELPS DEVELOP OR RELEARN THE SKILLS AND CONCEPTS NEEDED TO TRAVEL SAFELY AND INDEPENDENTLY WITHIN THE HOME AND THE COMMUNITY; INCLUDING INSTRUCTION IN THE USE OF A LONG CANE, ELECTRONIC TRAVEL DEVICES, PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION, SIGHTED GUIDE AND PRE-CANE SKILLS. ADDITIONALLY, AURORA PROVIDES SUPPORTIVE SHORT-TERM COUNSELING TO ASSIST WITH EMOTIONAL ADJUSTMENT AND COPING WITH VISION LOSS FOR INDIVIDUALS FAMILIES AND SIGNIFICANT OTHERS. INCLUDES SUPPORT GROUPS, AND 1:1 CONSULTATION AS WELL AS REFERRAL TO COMMUNITY RESOURCES SUCH AS FINANCIAL, HOUSING, MEDICAL OR VARIOUS ENTITLEMENT OR BENEFIT PROGRAMS.
BLIND/DEAF SOCIAL WORK - AT ANY AGE OR STAGE OF LIFE, A LOSS OF VISION OR HEARING CAN IMPACT OVERALL WELL-BEING AND PERSONAL CONFIDENCE. AURORA'S SERVICES PROVIDE THE INDIVIDUALIZED SUPPORT, INSTRUCTION AND EQUIPMENT NEEDED TO MAINTAIN THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF INDEPENDENCE POSSIBLE.
