Organizations Filed Purposes: TO SERVE FOOD TO THOSE IN NEED IN A CARING SETTING, AT NO CHARGE, TO COORDINATE EFFORTS OF VOLUNTEERS TO SERVE FOOD TO THOSE IN NEED AND TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ABOUT THE NEEDS OF THE POOR AND HUNGRY IN THE CITY OF SYRACUSE.

THE 2019-2020 FISCAL YEAR MARKED THE SAMARITAN CENTER'S FIFTH YEAR OF OPERATION AT ITS FACILITY AT THE FORMER ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST CHURCH ON THE CITY'S NORTH-SIDE. DURING THE REPORTING YEAR, WE SERVED OVER 123,000 MEALS TO THOSE IN NEED. THE ORGANIZATION WAS HIT, AS WERE WE ALL, WITH THE IMPACT OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC THE LAST QUARTER OF THE FISCAL YEAR. THE CENTER QUICKLY AND EARLY ON MODIFIED OPERATIONS TO A TAKE OUT MODEL IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO SAFELY PROVIDE ITS CRITICAL SERVICES WITHOUT INTERRUPTION. MEALS CONTINUE TO BE PROVIDED TWICE DAILY, WITHOUT QUESTIONS OR PRE-CONDITIONS. OUR VOLUNTEER WORK FORCE DURING THE FINAL QUARTER WAS NECESSARILY DECREASED BY ~70% IN ORDER TO ENSURE APPROPRIATE HEALTH AND SAFETY MEASURES. ADDITIONAL NON-PERISHABLE FOOD WAS DISTRIBUTED TO GUESTS TO PROVIDE EXTRA FOOD RESOURCES IN THE HOME SO THAT INDIVIDUALS COUULD AVOID CROWDED STORES AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. OUR POPULATION SHIFTED DURING THE COVID PERIOD AS WELL, WITH A SIGNIFICANT POPULATION OF GUESTS NEW TO THE EMERGENCY FOOD NETWORK, HAVING LOST JOBS AND RESOURCES AS THE ECONOMY SHUT DOWN IN RESPONSE TO THE VIRUS. PRIOR TO THE MODIFICATIONS OF THE LAST QUARTER, SAMARITAN OPERATED AS IT HAS IN THE PAST, PROVIDING SIT-DOWN MEALS, CASE MANAGEMENT SERVICES AND ON-SITE AGENCY OUTREACH TO ASSIST INDIVIDUALS WITH THE SUPPORTS AND SERVICES NEEDED TO MOVE TOWARD SELF-SUFFICIENCY. IN THE FIRST THREE QUARTERS OF THE FISCAL YEAR, 234 INDIVUALS WERE ASSISTED THROUGH ONE-TO-ONE CASEMANAGEMENT SUPPORT WITH ISSUES SUCH AS HOUSING, EMPLOYMENT, MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT, CARE COORDINATION AND HEALTH LINKAGES. DURING THAT SAME TIME PERIOD, 72 AGENCIES WERE ON SITE TO ASSIST GUESTS IN ACCESSING NECESSARY SERVICES, WITH OVER 1,200 INDIVIDUALS PROVIDED WITH SUPPORT RELATED TO ENERGY ASSISTANCE, SUBSTANCE ABUSE SERVICES, VETERANS SERVICES AND EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPS. THE ORGANIZATION IS IN THE MIDST OF CREATIVELY RE-IMAGINING HOW THESE SERVICES CAN BE BEST PROVIDED WITHIN A COVID ENVIRONMENT, INCLUDING THE USE OF REMOTE TECHNOLOGIES AND ASSISTANCE. SAMARITAN CENTER HAS BEEN BLESSED WITH A STRONG COMMUNITY OF SUPPORT IN THE FORM OF VOLUNTEERS AND DONATED GOODS- THE CONTINUATION OF SERVICES DURING THIS CHALLENGING TIME WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE THAN DIFFICULT WITHOUT THE GENEROSITY OF SO MANY.
