Land acquisition for nature preservation
During 2020 Wilderness East (WE) furthered its mission of advancing wildlands protection in Ohio by working in collaboration with the Highlands Nature Sanctuary (HNS) to acquire several new natural areas and hold them until funds could be raised by HNS to buy and permanently protect them. Wilderness East acquired via a secured promissory note with The Highlands Nature Sanctuary, Inc. 19.75 acres of vacant land in Adams county lying adjacent to a pre-existing nature preserve known as Ohio River Bluffs, with the intention of future annexation to that preserve. Additionally, WE transferred to HNS a 5.5-acre home site, a stone mill house on 2.5 acres and 66.476 acres of vacant land. All three parcels directly border the Rocky Fork Creek, serving to expand the pre-existing preserve known as The Highlands Nature Sanctuary in Highland County. A 52-acre parcel along Cliff Run in Ross county was also transferred to HNS, next to Lewis Gorge in a new preserve region near Paint Creek Reservoir. All four parcels were transferred in exchange for the forgiveness of secured promissory notes.
