TO PRESERVE AND SHARE THE HERITAGE OF AFRICA BY USING TRADITIONAL ARTS AS AN EDUCATIONAL TOOL TO PROMOTE CULTURAL AWARENESS IN COMMUNITIES GLOBALLY.
TO PRESERVE, PROMOTE AND SHARE THE RICH CULTURAL HERITAGE AND TRADITIONS OF AFRICA AND AFRICANS THROUGH EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AND HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING IN DANCE DRUMS, MUSIC, ART, FOOD AND LANGUAGE FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS.
PERFORMANCES: HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING IN DANCE, DRUM, MUSIC, ARTS, FOOD AND LANGUAGE. LECTURE DEMONSTRATION TIME SAMPLER FOR PRE-SCHOOL AND HOME SCHOOL STUDENTS. THESE PROGRAMS ARE INTERACTIVE, INTERDISCIPLINARY AND BASED ON STATEWIDE/NATIONAL ARTS & HUMANITIES STANDARDS THAT ENGAGE STUDENTS TO UTILIZE THEIR CREATIVE THINKING SKILLS, AWARENESS OF CULTURAL DIFFERENCES AND SIMILARITIES, WHILE BUILDING SELF-ESTEEM. WITH OVER 350 PERFORMANCES ANNUALLY, BI-OKOTO REACHED OVER 252,560 ADULTS AND CHILDREN DURING 2018 SCHOOL YEAR WITHIN 36 US STATES.
CULTURAL CENTER ACTIVITIES: CLASSES & SUMMER CAMP - YEAR-LONG CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS OFFERED TO STUDENTS AGES 5 TO ADULT IN AFRICAN DANCE DRUM, SALSA, AFRO-CARIBBEAN DANCE, ZUMBA, CAPOEIRA, AFRICAN COOKING AND PHILOSOPHY, AND FIVE (5) AFRICAN LANGUAGES. THE SUMMER CAMP EXPOSES CHILDREN TO CULTURE, DANCE, MUSIC, FIELD TRIPS, LANGUAGES, HAND-MADE CRAFTS AND CHARACTER BUILDING EXERCISES AND ACTIVITIES. THE LAST DAY OF CAMP INCLUDE A PERFORMANCE AND ART EXHIBIT BY THE STUDENTS FOR THEIR PARENTS AND COMMUNITY. IN 2018, 118 FAMILIES AND 163 STUDENTS WERE SERVED.
RESIDENCIES: CUSTOMIZED WORKSHOPS FOR SCHOOLS/COLLEGES THAT OCCUR FOR A MINIMUM OF A WEEK PERIOD. RESIDENCY PROGRAMS INTRODUCE BASIC MUSIC, DANCE AND THEATRE SKILLS WHILE APPLYING LANGUAGE ARTS, MATH AND SCIENCE CURRICULUM THROUGH RECOGNITION OF PATTERNS/SHAPES IN DANCE, BEATS AND RHYTHMS. THE RESIDENCY ADDS A CULMINATING EVENT BY THE STUDENTS AND FACULTY. BI-OKOTO CONDUCTED SIX (6) RESIDENCIES IN 2018 WITH 3,145 STUDENTS.
