Community Matters exists to create a thriving and more just community by removing barriers to opportunity. We work alongside our neighbors to create opportunities, engage the community in the development process, create ways to serve together, and re-build the local economy through social entrepreneurship. Community Matters was created from the will of Lower Price Hill residents to address the overwhelming disparity in access to opportunities. All our work is created from listening to the ideas of residents who are seeking to change the current environment of 48% living in poverty, 66% unemployment rate, 90% renters without access to truly dignified housing, and the second lowest life expectancy rate in Cincinnati. Our programs challenge the idea that social services alone are the answer to our needs. Instead, we believe that our community has the ability to meet its needs and to create long-term well-being by investing directly in our neighbors' abilities and expertise.
To create a thriving and more just community by removing barriers to opportunity.
Family SustainabilityFamilies are the foundation of our community. To build a thriving community, our neighbors should have the resources needed to achieve their goals. Each year, we partner with around 600 families to listen to their ideas, invest in their strengths, and navigate resources to meet needs. Over 82% of families continue to meet their goals each year.
Resident LeadershipAt the center of our mission is the belief that our neighbors have the talents, interests, and ideas to build a thriving community - our job is to invest in them. We invest directly in leadership from residents in a range of projects and initiatives including, the Neighborhood Action Team, LPH Artist Collective, the Washing Well laundromat, and resident leadership on our board of directors.
Thriving CommunityThe culmination of our work is a community in which all residents are valued, can afford to live, and have access to vibrant community spaces and businesses. We invest in resident owned businesses, high quality affordable housing for renters and homeowners, and a range of community driven public spaces and activities.
