Groundwork Ohio River Valley's mission is to engage youth and communities in urban environmental initiatives that positively impact their quality-of-life. We accomplish this mission with a unique approach that incorporates youth employment, workforce development, restoration, volunteer training, and social and environmental justice. Groundwork is the region's only environmental nonprofit with leadership of color at all levels of staff and board.
Groundwork's Green Corps young-adult workforce is a mechanism for community engagement and job creation. Young-adults from the city are trained and certified in job readiness, environmental technician skills, water quality testing, greenhouse skills, invasive species removal, green infrastructure design, and maintenance and energy efficiency. Employees receive multiple certifications applicable to their work and job sectors. Green Industries are growing across the country. Participants in the Green Corps will graduate equipped with certifications and skills to acquire jobs in industries such as greenhouse production, energy efficiency, and natural resource management. We have designed a unique, well-rounded program that prepares entry-level candidates for numerous emerging green markets in Cincinnati.
Groundwork is building the region's largest youth green jobs program with a focus on environmental justice and education. We are working with Cincinnati Public Schools, the Cincinnati Park Board, and other partner agencies to provide safe, outdoor education and income-generating activities for youth participating in urban agriculture, land restoration, and sustainability activities. Groundwork designs programs to reach people of color and/or low-income communities traditionally left behind by the conservation/environmental movement.
Groundwork's internships focus on green infrastructure and its effect on the natural environment. Interns learn about vegetation and water quality monitoring techniques through the implementation of a a monitoring program; learn and assist Groundwork staff with GIS-based project management; engage in ecological fieldwork, including habitat restoration, wetland restoration, invasive species removal, native plant programming, permaculture principles, green infrastructure maintenance, site design, and tool safety/maintenance; assist with community outreach efforts (community councils, civic organizations, local government, etc.); and learn nonprofit business structure and management.
