Organizations Filed Purposes: The Immigrant and Refugee Law Center provides accessible legal services to immigrant and refugee families in the Greater Cincinnati community.

The Immigrant and Refugee Law Center launched in 2018 to meet the urgent need for free legal services among low-income immigrant and refugee families in Cincinnati. The first of its kind in the country, IRLC is a self sustained nonprofit located within Cincinnati Public Schools. Our innovative approach leverages Community Learning Centers: by situating ourselves in existing, trusted centers of services for families, we remove barriers to service. We provide assistance with humanitarian-based immigration remedies enshrined in US law; we help families understand and exercise their legal rights, including access to humanitarian protections to which they are entitled. Our services include direct legal representation and consultation, green card and citizenship clinics, and family rights education. Our innovative, school-based model is a game changer. In addition to our legal services, clients access badly needed services from CLC partners: medical care, counseling, housing, clothing, food, and financial assistance, as well as English classes, early childhood programming, and school enrollment. Additional community partners provide trauma-informed counseling.During our first year, we served 100 families and impacted more than 200 children from 25 home countries in 21 schools around the city; recruited more than 70 active legal and non-legal volunteers; and worked with 11 law students. Families we serve have not only made progress in securing immigration relief, but have also witnessed improvements in student enrollment and attendance, as well as parent engagement. In 2019 we served more than 300 families. We also expanded our staff to include three attorneys (Executive Director, Managing Attorney and Program Manager). To date, we have served more than 500 families from over 40 countries around the world and 42 schools across the city and worked with over 100 volunteers and 42 legal interns.
