EDUCATION PROGRAMS SUPPORTED BY THE CLEVELAND VA MEDICAL RESEARCH AND EDUCATION FOUNDATION HELP DISSEMINATE THE RESULTS OF RESEARCH SO THEY MAY BE TRANSLATED TO CLINICAL PRACTICE, PROVIDE HOSPITAL STAFF WITH TRAINING IN THE LATEST TREATMENTS, AND HELP PATIENTS UNDERSTAND AND MANAGE THEIR MEDICAL CONDITIONS.

"A PHASE 3, PLACEBO-CONTROLLED, RANDOMIZED, OBSERVER-BLINDED STUDY TO EVALUATE THE EFFICACY, SAFETY AND TOLERABILITY OF A CLOSTRIDIUM DIFFICLE VACCINE IN ADULTS 50 YEARS OF AGE AND OLDER" PFIZER AND THE CLEVELAND VA MEDICAL RESEARCH AND EDUCATION FOUNDATION ARE ADMINISTERING A RESEARCH STUDY WHICH IS EVALUATING A POTENTIAL PREVENTATIVE TREATMENT FOR CLOSTRIDIUM DIFFICILE. CLOSTRIDIUM DIFFICILE IS A TYPE OF BACTERIA THAT LIVES IN THE HUMAN INTESTINES AND IS ONE OF THE MOST COMMON CAUSES OF HEALTHCARE-RELATED INFECTIONS. THE CLINICAL RESEARCH STUDY IS EVALUATING AN INVESTIGATIONAL VACCINE FOR SAFETY AND EFFECTIVENESS IN REDUCING THE CHANCE OF GETTING CLOSTRIDIUM DIFFICILE. CLEVELAND IS THE LEAD AND COORDINATING SITE FOR A TOTAL OF 18 VA SITES WHERE THIS STUDY IS TAKING PLACE (DR. DONSKEY-PFIZER 1704 CLOVER)

CAROTID REVASCULARIZATION AND MEDICAL MANAGEMENT FOR ASYMPTOMATIC CAROTID STENOSIS TRAIL (CREST-2)TRIAL. STROKENET AND THE CLEVELAND VA MEDICAL RESEARCH AND EDUCATION FOUNDATION ARE ADMINISTERING A GRANT THAT LOOKS AT THE PREVENTION OF STROKE. THE PURPOSE OF THIS TRIAL IS TO DETERMINE THE BEST WAY TO PREVENT STROKES IN PEOPLE WHO HAVE A HIGH AMOUNT OF BLOCKAGE OF THEIR CAROTID ARTERY BUT NO STROKE SYMPTOMS RELATED TO THAT BLOCKAGE. EACH ELIGIBLE PARTICIPANT WILL BE EVALUATED TO DETERMINE WHICH PROCEDURE(S) IS BEST FOR HIM/HER. ALL PARTICIPANTS WILL RECEIVE INTENSIVE MEDICAL TREATMENT. IN ADDITION,PARTICIPANTS WILL BE RANDOMIZED TO RECEIVE THE SELECTED PROCEDURE OR NOT. (DR. PINAULT-NIH SUB 1719-CREST 2)

"EVALUATING THE IMPACT OF PROSTHETIC DEVICE FEATURES ON THE EXPERIENCE OF PROSTHESIS USE". THE DOD AND THE CLEVELAND VA MEDICAL RESEARCH AND EDUCATION FOUNDATION ARE ADMINISTERING A GRANT FOCUSED ON THE EXPERIENCE OF PROSTHESIS USE. THE USE OF A UPPER LIMB PROSTHESIS CAN IMPROVE FUNCTION AND QUALITY OF LIFE, HOWEVER MANY DEVICES ARE USED ONLY INTERMITTENTLY. THE AIM OF THIS STUDY IS TO BETTER UNDERSTAND HOW PROSTHESIS FEATURES INTERACT WITH PSYCHOSOCIAL ASPECTS OF THE PROSTHESIS USER'S EXPERIENCE AND OVERALL ATTITUDE TOWARDS ACCEPTANCE OF THE DEVICE.
