Organizations Filed Purposes:
Facilitate and support conservation and restoration projects within the watershed -- with an eye towards environmental justice 2) Dynamically increase public engagement and awareness of the watershed, and serve as a collective voice for the Doan Brook and its constituencies.
Organizational Management: The pandemic shifted DBWP activities to the virtual platform for all but the first quarter of 2020. Our program, project and governance meetings were held remotely. Staff operated from their homes for all functions, except for financial management. Our contractors did the same, including our bookkeeper Michelle Gregorczyk and our Saint Lukes grant coordinator, Marcia Hood. Andrew Klooster, who served as the Watershed Programs Manager, moved to Colorado. Elizabeth Smith was hired to fill the position on October 1, 2020. We serve as fiscal sponsors for Bluestone Heights and the Friends of Lower Lake. We updated our regulations from 16 Board of Trustee positions to a range, from 14-16. Currently we have 14 Trustees serving the organization. Lastly, the Board and staff created a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion statement in 2020.
Restoration: DBWP completed a grant that funded the installation of a new debris rack in the Doan Brook gorge. The rack, a total cost of $406,128.80, was the last phase of a restoration project which saw 350 linear feet of stream restoration. In 2020 we wrote and were awarded a grant from Ohio EPA. Ohio EPA awarded $300k to restore 600 linear feet along Doan Brook in Rockefeller Park. The land adjacent to this stream at this project site, was suitable for floodplain reconnection. DBWP applied to the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District for funding for the floodplain component of the project. They will contribute $510k in match to the OEPA funds to create a floodplain bench at Sowinski Park. These two projects will function as one, with one RFP, consulting team etc. The Friends of Lower Lake co-chairs and I wrote two small grants to fund native plant restoration at Lower Lake. A total of $5000 was raised. With Nature Center at Shaker Lakes staff taking the lead, DBWP contributed to a GLRI proposal, which was awarded, to plant planting 2,620 native trees and shrubs across 7 sites covering approximately 19.5 acres with a goal to intercept over 500,000 gallons of rainfall yearly. These proposed plantings would be along approximately 4,760 linear feet of stream throughout 6 communities and 5 watersheds (Baldwin Creek-East Branch Rocky River, Doan Brook-Frontal Lake Erie, Euclid Creek, Griswold Creek-Chagrin River, and Marsh Creek).
Green Infrastructure: DBWP restored a bioswale that we installed at Lower Shaker Lake, along South Park Blvd.Planning: DBWP hosted a committee of city, Sewer District, volunteer and non-profit representatives to collectively work on updating the Shaker Lakes Parklands Management Plan. DBWP continues to serve the Central Lake Erie Basin Collaborative (CLEB) Steering Committee. DBWP is one of five organizations to serve the Collaborative in this capacity. The CLEB met more frequently to support one another during Covid. The CLEB also incorporated a regular agenda item to embrace equity and inclusion into watershed work
