THE CLEVELAND ORCHESTRA INSPIRES AND ENRICHES LIVES BY CREATING EXTRAORDINARY MUSICAL EXPERIENCES AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF ARTISTIC EXCELLENCE.
SEVERANCE HALL AND NORTHEAST OHIO UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF MUSIC DIRECTOR FRANZ WELSER-MOST SINCE 2002, THE CLEVELAND ORCHESTRA HAS EXTENDED ITS ARTISTRY AND MUSICAL ABILITIES AND REMAINS ONE OF THE MOST SOUGHT-AFTER PERFORMING ENSEMBLES IN THE WORLD YEAR AFTER YEAR SETTING STANDARDS OF EXTRAORDINARY MUSIC EXCELLENCE, CREATIVE PROGRAMMING, AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT. THE NEW YORK TIMES DECLARED THE ENSEMBLE "AMERICA'S FINEST, STILL" IN OCTOBER 2020 FOR THE GROUP'S VIRTUOSITY, ELEGANT SOUND, VARIETY OF COLOR, AND CHAMBER-LIKE MUSICAL COHESION. IN SEPTEMBER 2019, THE ORCHESTRA ANNOUNCED THAT WELSER-MOST'S CONTRACT WOULD BE EXTENDED FOR FIVE YEARS TO 2027. THE CLEVELAND ORCHESTRA HAS A LONG AND STORIED RECORDING HISTORY, AND AN ENVIABLE CATALOG OF ALBUMS RELEASED ACROSS THE PAST CENTURY. THIS SEASON MARKED A NEW MILESTONE WITH THE LAUNCH OF THE ENSEMBLE'S OWN RECORDING LABEL AND TWO POWERFUL RELEASES. IN JUNE 2020 CAME THE CLEVELAND ORCHESTRA: A NEW CENTURY, THE LABEL'S INAUGURAL OFFERING, FEATURING SIX MUSICAL WORKS AVAILABLE ON COMPACT DISC OR THROUGH MAJOR STREAMING AND DIGITAL DOWNLOAD SERVICES. THE ORCHESTRA'S SECOND ALBUM OF THE YEAR PAIRS SCHUBERT'S CLASSICAL "GREAT" C-MAJOR SYMPHONY AND KRENEK'S MODERNISTIC STATIC AND ECSTATIC. RELEASED IN OCTOBER 2020, BOTH PIECES WERE RECORDED DURING THE CLEVELAND ORCHESTRA'S FINAL TWO WEEKS OF PERFORMANCES IN MARCH 2020, JUST AS THE CORONAVIRUS SHUT DOWN CONCERT HALLS AROUND THE WORLD. IN ADDITION TO BEING PRODUCED AS TRADITIONAL BOX SETS WITH COMPANION BOOKS, BOTH RELEASES ARE ALSO AVAILABLE AS DOWNLOADS OR FOR ONLINE STREAMING.THE CLEVELAND ORCHESTRA LAUNCHED TWO NEW DIGITAL MEDIA PRODUCTS IN OCTOBER 2020: THE VIDEO STREAMING SITE AND APP ADELLA, NAMED FOR THE ENSEMBLE'S PIONEERING FOUNDER ADELLA PRENTISS HUGHES, AND A DIGITAL CONCERT SERIES TITLED THE CLEVELAND ORCHESTRA: IN FOCUS. THE SERIES PREMIERE EPISODE, WITH MUSIC BY TCHAIKOVSKY, RESPIGHI, AND GEORGE WALKER, MARKED THE ORCHESTRA'S FIRST PERFORMANCE SINCE COVID-19 CAUSED CONCERT CANCELLATIONS IN MARCH 2020. THE ORCHESTRA ALSO PRESENTED TWO SEASONS OF ITS NEW PODCAST, ON A PERSONAL NOTE, AND A SERIES OF ARCHIVAL CONCERTS FOR STREAMING, CALLED TCO CLASSICS.
BLOSSOM MUSIC CENTERTHE 53RD BLOSSOM MUSIC FESTIVAL SEASON OF CONCERTS AT BLOSSOM MUSIC CENTER, SCHEDULED TO BEGIN WITH A SALUTE TO AMERICA ON JULY 3, 2020, WAS ALSO CANCELED BECAUSE OF THE ONGOING PANDEMIC. IN RESPONSE, THE ORCHESTRA LAUNCHED THE BLOSSOM PRESERVATION CHALLENGE TO SUSTAIN A BELOVED NORTHEAST OHIO SUMMERTIME TRADITION AND THE BLOSSOM COMMUNITY STEPPED UP TO SUPPORT THE ENSEMBLE'S SUMMER HOME. ACROSS THE PREVIOUS SUMMER, A FESTIVAL SEASON OF 20 CONCERTS WAS PRESENTED OVER 10 WEEKENDS BETWEEN THE FOURTH-OF-JULY AND MEMORIAL DAY HOLIDAYS, PLUS ONE ADDITIONAL SPECIAL EVENT RADIO TAPING FOR "WAIT, WAIT, DON'T TELL ME." OVERALL, THE 2019 FESTIVAL WELCOMED MORE THAN 123,500 MUSIC-LOVERS TO THE ORCHESTRA'S FESTIVAL CONCERTS, WITH ATTENDANCE LOWER THAN RECENT SEASONS DUE TO A RAINY SUMMER. NEVERTHELESS, ATTENDANCE REPRESENTED AN AVERAGE OF 6,200 PER CONCERT, THE SIXTH-HIGHEST AVERAGE IN THE FESTIVAL'S HISTORY. AN ADDITIONAL 299,000 ATTENDED TWO-DOZEN NON-ORCHESTRAL CONCERTS PRESENTED AT BLOSSOM MUSIC CENTER BY LIVE NATION ENTERTAINMENT.
TOURING AND RESIDENCIESEACH YEAR, THE ORCHESTRA ALLOCATES SEVERAL WEEKS OF ITS PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE TO RESIDENCIES AND TOURING ACTIVITIES BEYOND NORTHEAST OHIO, NATIONALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY. THESE ARE DESIGNED TO ENHANCE BOTH THE ARTISTIC AND FINANCIAL STRENGTH OF THE ORGANIZATION AND EXTEND THE ORCHESTRA'S WORLDWIDE REPUTATION. IN JANUARY 2020, THE ORCHESTRA MADE ITS ANNUAL RETURN TO MIAMI FOR THE 14TH YEAR OF ITS PARTNERSHIP WITH THE ADRIENNE ARSHT CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY. THOUSANDS OF SOUTH FLORIDIANS GATHERED AT THE ARSHT CENTER FOR EVENING PERFORMANCES AS WELL AS FREE EDUCATION CONCERTS. ORCHESTRA MUSICIANS ALSO WENT INTO MIAMI-DADE COUNTY TO SHARE MUSIC AND EDUCATION RESOURCES WITH THE COMMUNITY. IN ADDITION TO THE ORCHESTRA'S TWO-WEEK RESIDENCY IN MIAMI AND A PRESENTATION IN NAPLES (JANUARY 2020), THE ENSEMBLE PERFORMED A PAIR OF CONCERTS AT NEW YORK'S FAMED CARNEGIE HALL (OCTOBER 2019): THE ORCHESTRA AND WELSER-MOST WERE FEATURED AT THE CONCERT HALL'S OPENING-NIGHT GALA THE THIRD TIME THE ENSEMBLE WAS INVITED TO OPEN CARNEGIE HALL'S SEASON.THE ORCHESTRA'S TWENTIETH INTERNATIONAL TOUR UNDER WELSER-MOST, SCHEDULED FOR MARCH AND APRIL 2020, FEATURING SEVEN PERFORMANCES IN THREE CITIES ACROSS EUROPE AND FOUR CONCERTS IN THE UNITED ARAB EMIRATES AS THE FIRST U.S. ORCHESTRA TO PERFORM AT THE ABU DHABI FESTIVAL, WAS CANCELED DUE TO THE WORLDWIDE COVID-19 PANDEMIC.
