Organizations Filed Purposes:
To increase the independence, security, equality of opportunity, and quality of life, for all blind and visually-impaired people.
CONFERENCE AND CONVENTION :Annual convention was held November 14-17, 2019 in Columbus, Ohio at the Crown Plaza North Hotel. More than 100 persons attended with 30 exhibitors and vendors. The event was filled with seminars, workshops, social events, exhibitors/vendors and speakers.
SCHOLARSHIPS :Six scholarships are available to students who are blind or visually impaired or plan to work in a field related to visual impairment or blindness. Scholarships range from $ 1,000 for a entering freshman to $ 2,500 for a graduate student. Winners attend the Annual Convention to receive the awarded scholarship and receives a one year complementary membership to the organization. Five scholarships were awarded in 2019.The Organization also endowed scholarships at The Ohio State University, the University of Toledo and Wright State University.
RECREATION :Activities are offered to provide physical and social opportunities otherwise not available to the blind and visually impaired.Two activities occurred :1. The Winter Sports Retreat during Martin Luther King weekend in January 2019 at Punderson State Park in northern Ohio. Activities included skiing, snowshoeing, sledding and hiking outdoors plus indoor games, socializing, sing-alongs, and meals. Approximately 25-30 persons attended..2. The Summer Retreat took place during the first weekend in August 2019 on property owned by a family dedicated to assisting the blind and visually impaired. Activities included boating, jet skiing, swimming, fishing, hiking and picnicking. Approximately 12-15 persons attended.
