CAPA ENRICHES LIVES BY CULTIVATING AND NURTURING THE ARTS, SPREADING AN APPRECIATION THAT CAN BE FELT IN HEARTS, MINDS AND THE ECONOMY OF OUR COMMUNITIES. WE ACCOMPLISH OUR MISSION THROUGH OUR FOUR STRATEGIC PILLARS: (1) AS AN ARTS LEADER BY SUPPORTING SUSTAINABILITY AND COLLABORATING WITH ARTS GROUPS TO RAISE THE ARTS PROFILE IN OUR COMMUNITY; (2) AS A DYNAMIC PRESENTER OF EXCEPTIONAL ARTS PROGRAMMING THAT CHALLENGES, INSPIRES, ENTERTAINS, AND ENGAGES AUDIENCES; (3) THROUGH EDUCATION AND OUTREACH THAT PROVIDES COMMUNITY ACCESS TO PROGRAMS THAT PROMOTE THE APPRECIATION OF THE PERFORMING ARTS AND AUGMENT OTHER ARTS EDUCATION EFFORTS; AND (4) THROUGH STEWARDSHIP OF PERFORMING ARTS SPACES OFFERING TRANSFORMATIONAL EXPERIENCES FOR VISITORS, ARTISTS, AND RENTERS BY PROVIDING AND OPERATING FIRST-CLASS PERFORMING ARTS SPACES AND PRESERVING HISTORIC THEATRES.
CAPA PROVIDES SERVICES THAT BOLSTER AND ENLIVEN OUR COMMUNITY. WE OWN AND/OR MANAGE TEN THEATRES IN CENTRAL OHIO, WE PRESENT EXCEPTIONAL PERFORMERS FROM AROUND THE WORLD, WE PROVIDE EDUCATION PROGRAMS THAT SUPPORT THE SCHOOL CURRICULUM, AND WE PROVIDE VITAL ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES FOR OTHER ARTS ORGANIZATIONS. OUR THEATRES AND PRESENTATIONS ARE THE MOST PUBLIC ASPECTS OF OUR OPERATIONS. CAPA'S PRESENTATIONS IN FY20 REACHED OUT TO THE WHOLE COMMUNITY WITH DIVERSE PRESENTATIONS, INCLUDING THE PEKING ACROBATS (WORLD MUSIC/ ENTERTAINMENT), BELA FLECK AND THE FLECKTONES (BLUEGRASS), BLACK VIOLIN (CLASSICAL/JAZZ FUSION), ANJELAH JOHNSON (COMEDY), PEPPA PIG LIVE! (CHILDREN'S ENTERTAINMENT), PAT METHENY (JAZZ), AND DEAR EVAN HANSEN (IN PARTNERSHIP WITH BROADWAY IN COLUMBUS). OUR LARGEST PRODUCTION OF THE YEAR WAS THE TWO-DAY FESTIVAL LATINO, WHICH DREW MORE THAN 175,000 PEOPLE DOWNTOWN FOR A FREE CELEBRATION OF LATINO-HISPANIC ART AND CULTURES. ONE OF OUR SPECIAL PARTNERSHIPS WAS THE PRODUCTION OF TWISTED 3, IN COLLABORATION WITH BALLETMET, COLUMBUS SYMPHONY, AND OPERACOLUMBUS. WE CELEBRATED CAPA'S 50TH ANNIVERSARY IN 2019 WITH A SPECIAL EVENT EVERY MONTH. FOR EXAMPLE, IN NOVEMBER WE PRESENTED SUNJATA KUMALENYA, THE ORIGINAL WEST AFRICAN STORY OF THE LION KING, FREE TO THE PUBLIC. BEFORE THE PERFORMANCE, WE HOSTED SEVERAL HOURS OF FREE COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES FOR FAMILIES, LIKE MAKING MASKS AND LEARNING AFRICAN DRUMMING PATTERNS AND DANCE STEPS. ADDITIONAL COMMUNITY EVENTS INCLUDED ARTS WORKSHOPS AT CENTRAL COMMUNITY HOUSE AND AT THE ETHIOPIAN TEWAHEDO SOCIAL SERVICES NORTHEAST CENTER. BETWEEN JULY 1 AND MARCH 12 WHEN THE THEATRE WAS CLOSED BECAUSE OF THE PANDEMIC, OUR THEATRES WELCOMED MORE THAN 350,000 PEOPLE FOR IN-PERSON PERFORMANCES, AND MORE THAN 180,000 OF THEM ATTENDED ONE OF CAPA'S PRESENTATIONS. AFTER THE THEATRES HAD TO CLOSE IN MARCH, CAPA PIVOTED TO ONLINE PROGRAMMING TO CONTINUE PRESENTING QUALITY ARTISTS TO THE COMMUNITY. WE CREATED THE APART TOGETHER SERIES ON FACEBOOK, FEATURING TWENTY LOCAL ARTISTS, PERFORMING IN THEIR OWN HOMES. THE SERIES ATTRACTED MORE THAN 144,000 VIEWERS. PERFORMERS INCLUDED CAROLINE BENNETT (SINGER AND SPOKEN WORD ARTIST), JESSE MICHAEL BARR (AMERICAN FOLK MUSIC), HAPPY CHICHESTER (R&B), AND ANGELA PARLEY (POP, GARAGE ROCK).
OUR THEATRE OPERATIONS INCLUDED FACILITATING RENTAL EVENTS, MAINTAINING THE THEATRES, AND PROVIDING TICKETING AND ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES FOR OTHER NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS. RENTAL EVENTS BROUGHT THOUSANDS OF PATRONS TO THE THEATRES BETWEEN JULY AND MARCH. ADDITIONALLY, THE THEATRES HOSTED HUNDREDS OF MEETINGS AND REHEARSALS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. ONE OF THE MOST INNOVATIVE SEGMENTS OF OUR OPERATIONS IS THE ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES THAT WE PROVIDE FOR OTHER ORGANIZATIONS. OUR ADMINISTRATIVE PARTNERS CAN CHOOSE FROM A MENU OF SERVICES TO SUIT THEIR PARTICULAR NEEDS, SUCH AS ACCOUNTING, TICKETING, AND MARKETING. WE HAVE DEVELOPED NEW BUSINESS MODELS WITH SEVERAL OF THE PARTNERS, CREATING STRUCTURES THAT ENABLE THE ARTS GROUPS TO REMAIN INDEPENDENT WITH THEIR OWN BOARDS, WHILE STILL TAKING ADVANTAGE OF BACK-OFFICE ASSISTANCE FROM CAPA. IN FACT WITH THE UNCERTAINTIES CAUSED BY THE PANDEMIC, OUR ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES LIKE ACCOUNTING AND BUDGETING HAVE PROVED TO BE MORE VALUABLE THAN EVER, AS ARTS GROUPS GO THROUGH CONSTANT CONTINGENCY PLANNING AND RE-FORECASTING.
OUR EDUCATION AND OUTREACH PROGRAMS INCLUDE THE CAPA MARQUEE AWARDS, AN OFFICIAL REGIONAL AWARDS PROGRAM OF THE NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL THEATRE AWARDS, THE PASSPORT TO LEARNING STUDENT MATINEE SERIES, ARTIST WORKSHOPS AND MASTER CLASSES, ARTS-IN-WELLNESS PROGRAMS, AND TOURS OF THE HISTORIC THEATRES. WE REACH OUT TO UNDERSERVED SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITIES THROUGH FREE PROGRAMS AND EVENTS, REDUCED OR FREE TICKETS, AND SUBSIDIES FOR BUSING STUDENTS TO OUR THEATRES. STUDENTS ALSO RECEIVE STUDY GUIDES AND SUGGESTIONS FOR FOLLOW UP ACTIVITIES. MORE THAN 13,000 CHILDREN BENEFITTED FROM OUR EDUCATION PROGRAMS DURING THE FISCAL YEAR; AN ADDITIONAL 75,000 CHILDREN ATTENDED EVENTS AS REPORTED IN PROGRAM SERVICE #1. IN MARCH AFTER WE HAD TO SUSPEND IN-PERSON EVENTS BECAUSE OF COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS, CAPA TRANSITIONED TO VIRTUAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS. FOR EXAMPLE, IN MAY WE HOSTED A VIRTUAL CELEBRATION OF THE GRADUATING SENIORS PARTICIPATING IN OUR MARQUEE PROGRAM TO HONOR THEIR TALENTS AND MANY ACCOMPLISHMENTS. ANOTHER EXAMPLE OCCURRED WHEN WE POSTED TOURS OF OUR HISTORIC THEATRES LED BY JASON GAY, VICE PRESIDENT OF OPERATIONS, ON FACEBOOK, SO THAT PEOPLE COULD GET BEHIND-THE-SCENES VIEWS AND INFORMATION ABOUT THESE IMPORTANT HISTORIC LANDMARKS.
