THE COLUMBUS MUSEUM OF ART SEEKS TO CREATE GREAT EXPERIENCES WITH GREAT ART FOR EVERYONE.
EXHIBITIONS / COLLECTIONS: IN 2020, CMA CELEBRATED 142 YEARS OF CREATIVE EXPERIENCES, ENGAGED LEARNING, AND CONNECTIVITY FOR RESIDENTS OF AND VISITORS TO CENTRAL OHIO. CMA HOUSES MORE THAN 13,000 WORKS OF ART INCLUDING AN INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNIZED COLLECTION OF AMERICAN AND EUROPEAN MODERNIST WORKS. IN A YEAR UNLIKE ANY OTHER, CMA FACED A VARIETY OF NEW CHALLENGES BROUGHT ABOUT BY COVID19, INCLUDING A 14-WEEK FULL CLOSURE FROM MARCH 13 THROUGH JUNE 23, 2020 IN ACCORDANCE WITH RESTRICTIONS IN PLACE BY THE STATE OF OHIO DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH. MUSEUM CAPACITY HAS BEEN REDUCED TO ACCOMMODATE SOCIAL DISTANCING IN THE GALLERIES AND ALL VISITORS MUST RESERVE TICKETS IN ADVANCE OF THEIR VISIT. PRIOR TO CLOSURE, CMA HAS JUST OPENED ITS CRITICALLY-ACCLAIMED EXHIBITION ART AFTER STONEWALL: 1969-1989 AS THE FINAL STOP ON A NATIONAL TOUR INCLUDING VENUES IN NEW YORK AND MIAMI. THE NEW MARGARET M. WALTER WING, OPENED IN 2015, ADDED 50,000+ SQ. FT. OF LIVELIER, MORE EXPERIENTIAL SPACES AND INCREASED CMA'S PUBLIC VALUE BY DEEPENING ITS CAPACITY TO SERVE IN WAYS THAT ARE RELEVANT AND MEANINGFUL IN THE 21ST CENTURY.
PROGRAMS / LEARNING: CMA CONTINUES TO BE AN INNOVATOR IN THE FIELD OF MUSEUMS AND LEARNING, RECEIVING WIDESPREAD RECOGNITION IN BOTH THE MUSEUM AND EDUCATION WORLD. WITH THE OPENING OF A NEW CENTER FOR CREATIVITY IN 2010, CMA ADOPTED CREATIVITY AS OUR SOCIAL MISSION AND RALLY CALL IN WHICH TO CHAMPION, ENGAGE AND SERVE OUR COMMUNITY. WE HAVE RECEIVED WIDESPREAD RECOGNITION FOR THIS WORK INCLUDING BEING AWARDED THE NATIONAL MEDAL FROM THE INSTITUTE OF MUSEUM AND LIBRARY SERVICES, THE NATION'S HIGHEST HONOR FOR INSTITUTIONS MAKING SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTIONS TO THEIR COMMUNITY. CMA SUPPORTS THE NEEDS OF EDUCATORS AS THEY RELATE TO BEST PRACTICES IN CREATIVITY AROUND IMAGINATION, CRITICAL THINKING AND INNOVATION. THE ANNUAL TEACHING FOR CREATIVITY INSTITUTE HAS SERVED MORE THAN 300 TEACHERS AND ADMINISTRATORS FROM 35 DISTRICTS AND ORGANIZATIONS (E.G. CHARTER ENTITIES, DIOCESES), FROM FOUR STATES, WITH A COLLECTIVE REACH AND RIPPLE IMPACT OF MORE THAN 200,000 CHILDREN AND YOUTH SERVED. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH COLUMBUS STATE COMMUNITY COLLEGE, CMA PRESENTED THE SECOND YEAR OF WONDER SCHOOL, A LAB PRESCHOOL THAT IS RECEIVING NATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR ITS IMPACT ON EARLY CHILDHOOD LEARNING. PROGRAMS FOR DIVERSE AUDIENCES INCLUDE SPARKING IMAGINATION, A TOUR EXPERIENCE FOR PEOPLE WITH ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE AND THEIR CAREGIVERS, AND ART OF ANALYSIS, A PROGRAM FOR ALL 2ND YEAR MEDICAL STUDENTS AT THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY, AS WELL AS SPECIAL TOURS FOR THE VISUALLY IMPAIRED AND VISITORS ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM. FOLLOWING THE COVID-19 OUTBREAK IN MARCH, CMA PIVOTED TO ALL ON-LINE AND VIRTUAL PROGRAMS TO MAINTAIN CONTINUITY AND SERVE THE COMMUNITY.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH: CMA HAS MADE A SIGNIFICANT INVESTMENT IN ITS EFFORTS TO BE ACCESSIBLE AND WELCOMING TO EVERYONE. THIS INCLUDES CONTINUING TO OFFER FREE SUNDAYS EACH AND EVERY WEEK, REMOVING FINANCIAL BARRIERS FOR EVERYONE TO VISIT. FREE SUNDAYS ANNUALLY SERVES SOME 140,000 VISITORS, OR NEARLY 40% OF ANNUAL ATTENDANCE. A DEDICATED FUNDRAISING HAS SECURED FUNDING TO MAINTAIN FREE SUNDAYS FOR AT LEAST THE NEXT FIVE YEARS. CMA INCREASINGLY PROVIDES BILINGUAL PRINT MATERIALS, WALL TEXT, AND LABELS (ENGLISH AND SPANISH) AND IS DEVELOPING BILINGUAL OPTIONS FOR NEW ONLINE AND VIRTUAL OFFERINGS. CMA ALSO HAS DEVELOPED SENSORY SENSITIVITIES RESOURCES TO AID INDIVIDUALS WITH AN AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER AND/OR SENSORY SENSITIVITIES; A NEW TOUR OPPORTUNITY HAS BEEN DEVELOPED FOR DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING VISITORS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH COLUMBUS STATE COMMUNITY COLLEGE VOLUNTEER INTERPRETERS USING AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE. THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, CMA PARTNERS WITH A VARIETY OF CULTURAL AND SOCIAL ORGANIZATIONS TO BRING FREE, CREATIVE EXPERIENCES TO COMMUNITIES THROUGHOUT COLUMBUS, INCLUDING COLUMBUS RECREATION AND PARKS, COLUMBUS METROPOLITAN LIBRARIES, AND YWCA HOMELESS FAMILY CENTER AMONG OTHERS. IN LIVING ITS MISSION, CMA ALSO FOCUSES ON BETTERING THE COMMUNITY BY OFFERING MANY INSPIRING PROGRAMS TO ENGAGE BROAD AND DIVERSE AUDIENCES AND INCREASE ACCESSIBILITY, INCLUDING LOUD AND PROUD, OUR FIRST EVER LGBTQ AND ALLIED MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM, AND FREE SUNDAYS, ELIMINATING BARRIERS FOR SOME 100,000 VISITORS ANNUALLY.
