The staff, volunteers, and participants work together to cultivate a safe and supportive community at the Center of E. Town Street in Columbus, OH. Programming at the Center falls into five key areas: social and behavioral health; holistic health and wellness, life-skills development; identity affirmation and community building; and leadership development, empowerment, and advocacy. Daily activities change on a regular basis, are based on input from the youth participants, and include Friday pizza and movie nights, Arts Programming, Game Nights, Discussion Groups, and Health and Fitness activities. Snacks and meals are available, and a resource center offers items addressing basic needs such as clothing outerwear, hygience items, referral to other community resources. Events, including "Other Prom" and marching in Columbus Pride Parade, provide fun, safe, and positive venues for youth planning, organization, and leadership.
KYC supports a network of over 92 GSA (Genders and Sexualities Alliance) clubs operating in schools across Ohio where students anywhere along the spectrum of sexual orientation and gender identity are welcomed and a culture of support and inclusion is developed. KYC's GSA Network Coordinator provides guidance and support to advisors and students, linking the clubs together for mutual assistance. GSA members learn about determing a group's mission, setting goals, project planning and implementation, team building, and leadership. GSA members are also encouraged to participate in the Youth Leadership Council, where youth are provided opportunities to make them stronger, more effective leaders. Council members are provided a formal space to discuss challenges facing their GSA and the ability to work with other LGBTQ and ally students to plan and implement events. One such event is the Ohio GSA Summit, which brings together LGBTQ youth leaders from throughout Ohio to share challenges and best practices for GSAs, and to focus on shared advocacy for LGBTQ and ally youth.
The goal is to create more inclusive environments for LGBTQ youth everywhere in the community. KYC provides training to youth-serving professionals and others in the community to help understanding of LGBTQ youth experience, terminology, risk factors, how to promote success, and how to create safe and affirming environments and services. Trainings are tailored to the audience and additional resources are provided. KYC also advocates for individual youth within the school, and other settings, by request.
