Promote access to safety, healing, justice and financial recovery for Ohio crime victims through meaningful rights and quality services.
In 2019, OVWA conducted 24 trainings for advocates and allied professionals across Ohio. We were asked by Ohio's Attorney General's office to conduct 5 regional trainings focused on trauma-informed and trauma-responsive trainings for crime victim advocates and allied professionals. For this initiative OVWA partnered with experts on a regional and statewide level to conduct these trainings. We felt that while core information can be provided by experts from the Center for Family Safety and Healing, regions would benefit from hearing from professionals in their regions of the state so OVWA sought out experts across Ohio to relay this critical information. OVWA and our training partners trained 140 advocates and allied professionals in this endeavor. In addition to these regional two-day trainings, OVWA also provided 4 in-person quarterly membership trainings, 9 member and non-member webinars, 13 specialized requested trainings, and were asked to specifically train first responders in Central Ohio. OVWA staff trained a total of 572 advocates and allied professionals in 2019.
OVWA offers technical assistance to all types of advocates, allied professionals, their organizations and of course, victims of crime. Technnical assistance can be in-person, by phone or via email and is provided by OVWA staff. In 2019, OVWA provided technical assistance by phone and emails to 96 advocates, allied professionals and victims of crime. OVWA staff are all NOVA certified in crisis response and are members with the Ohio Crisis Response Team The year 2019 brought specific challenges to Ohio. Ohio faced 3 incidents that required deployment of the Ohio Crisis Response Team and in turn, OVWA staff. OVWA responded to a KKK rally in Dayton; a tornado in Fairborn; and the Oregon District Mass Shooting in Dayton all within a 3 month span. OVWA provided crisis intervention and crisis response to the citizens of these towns and counties over the span of several months. OVWA staff ultimately served 432 Ohioans in-person individually and in group settings during and in the aftermath of these tragedies.
