Through the power of cinema, THE NEON creates a space where diversity is celebrated, civic-minded missions are put into action and where though-provoking engagement is revered.
BOX OFFICE- Despite a 3 month state mandated closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic, THE NEON movie theater held in-person screenings of over 60 first run films in 2020. These films were exclusively independent, foreign, and documentary. In addition to the art house fare, the theater added 20 retrospective titles to the calendar after reopening to the public in late June, 2020. To expand the reach of the theater's flagship independent content, a newly created virtual cinema option was launched during the closure. Virtual cinema made 90 first run films available for streaming at home. For each ticket purchased to a traditional in-person engagement, a % royalty was paid to the film distribution company, a 2.5% commission was paid to an independent film booking agent, and fixed shipping costs were incurred for the delivery of the film content. For each virtual cinema ticket purchased for streaming off site, the ticket was paid directly to the film distributor's virtual platform; the theater's share of the ticket proceeds was returned to THE NEON at the close of the engagement.
CONCESSIONS- Theater concession area includes a unique variety of refreshments that feature locally made favorites along side movie classics. Full Monday-Sunday liquor license and espresso bar help support the hospitality needs of THE NEON's community partnered screenings and special events. Freshly made popcorn, movie candy, and Coca-Cola products are available at the lowest theater prices in down. Featured local offerings include gourmet coffee, craft beer, small batch vodka, chocolates, vegan cookies, and biscotti. During the closure due to COVID-19 pandemic, a highly successful "Candy Clearance" sale was held, offering curbside pickup of the theater's most popular fare.
COMMUNITY PARTNERED SCREENINGS- Due to COVID-19 pandemic, community partnered screenings and special events were held primarily between Jan 1-Mar 12, 2020. The number of events was drastically reduced from 2019 with numerous cancellations and postponements beginning March 15, 2020. Less that 20 community screenings were able to take place in 2020. For those events, each film was hand picked by community members who rallied around the unique impact of that single film. Such screenings brought in hundreds of people from diverse walks of life. Most events included a Q&A session with the community partners and their chosen guest speakers, including accomplished filmmakers and scholars from all over the country. The annual LGBT Film Festival was held primarily virtually in 2020, inviting a new opportunity to expand the reach of this diverse and thought-provoking content. Virtual inclusion and supplementary virtual content will be integrated into many community partnered screenings moving forward and allow THE NEON to broaden its mission of utilizing film as an educational tool.
