Organizations Filed Purposes: TO IMPROVE THE COMMUNITY LIFE OF THE TWIN TOWERS NEIGHBORHOOD AND DAYTON'S EAST SIDE THROUGH SUSTAINABLE URBAN AGRICULTURE, URBAN LAND RESTORATION AND STEWARDSHIP, AND COMMUNITY EDUCATION.

MISSION OF MARY COOPERATIVE MANAGED OVER 4.25 ACRES OF URBAN LAND IN TWIN TOWERS, A LOW-INCOME NEIGHBORHOOD IN DAYTON. WE INSTALLED 3 BEEHIVES TO PROVIDE VALUABLE ECOSYSTEM SERVICE IN AND AROUND THE NEIGHBORHOOD. WE PLANTED OVER 350 NATIVE TREES AND WILDFLOWERS IN THE GARDENS. WE CLEARED OVER 4,500 SQUARE FEET OF INVASIVE SPECIES AND BEGAN REPOPULATING THE AREA ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE SILVER LN. GARDEN BY EXPANDING THE PAW PAW GROVE. WE CREATED 22 COMMUNITY GARDEN BEDS AND 20 BACKYARD GARDEN BEDS, INCREASING THE AVAILABLE GARDEN SPACE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD BY 1,880 SQUARE FEET.

AS PART OF OUR WEEKLY SHARE PROGRAM, 100 FAMILIES RECEIVED FRESH PRODUCE FROM OUR FARM FOR 22 WEEKS. APPROXIMATELY 40 FAMILIES RECEIVED PRODUCE AT A STEEP DISCOUNT OF ONE-THIRD OF THE MARKET VALUE BECAUSE THEY WERE IDENTIFIED AS FOOD INSECURE. WE WERE ABLE TO DISTRIBUTE FOOD FARTHER AFIELD IN DAYTON THIS YEAR. WE DISTIBUTED PRODUCE AT A WEEKLY ROADSIDE FARM MARKET IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD, AT A MONTHLY NEIGHBORHOOD FLEA MARKET, AT THE RTA BUS HUB IN DOWNTOWN DAYTON, AND WE DONATED PRODUCE TO THE ST. MARY'S FOOD PANTRY. PRODUCE WAS DISTRIBUTED THROUGH TWO ADDITIONAL CHANNELS; 2ND ST. MARKET AND 15 DIABETIC CLIENTS. IN ALL WE DISTRIBUTED OVER 52,000 POUNDS OF FRESH PRODUCE IN 2019.

MISSION OF MARY COOPERATIVE HOSTED OVER 980 PEOPLE AT THE FARM FOR EDUCATIONAL TOURS. ON THESE TOURS WE TAUGHT PEOPLE ABOUT SUSAINABLE URBAN AGRICULTURE, HEALTHY EATING AND LIFESTYLES, COMMUNITY BUILDING, AND NATIVE LAND RESTORATION. WE ALSO HOSTED A DAY CAMP FOR 18 NEIGHBORHOOD KIDS IN THE 2ND THROUGH 4TH GRADES FOR 4 WEEKS. THE KIDS LEARNED ABOUT SCIENCE, MATH, CULINARY ARTS, AND HEALTHY LIFESTYLES. 14 YOUNG ADULTS VOLUNTEERED OVER 2,400 HOURS OF LABOR AT THE FARM. THEY LEARNED ABOUT URBAN FARMING AND ABOUT BEING SERVANT LEADERS. LED AND ORGANIZED 24 EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPS ON GARDENING, SEASON EXTENSION, COOKING, PICKLING, PLANTING TREES, ETC.
