Organizations Filed Purposes:
To promote rewarding manufacturing careers for the future sustainability of the manufacturing sector through outreach, education, training, and strategic partnerships.
AWT creates awareness of manufacturing careers through its programs, in order to help reduce the workforce skills gap created by shifting demographics and decreased enrollment in career and technical education (CTE) programs. One of AWTs primary manufacturing education programs is RoboBots. Through this program, high school students partner with local manufacturing companies to build a combat robot and compete against other schools and companies. AWTs JuniorBots program is a similar program for middle school students. These combat robotics programs give students the opportunity to design, build, and machine their own products. This hands-on experience allows students to be exposed to various career opportunities in the manufacturing sector and helps students discover their own aptitudes and interests. After completing the RoboBots program, many students are offer part-time or full-time employment by their RoboBot manufacturing company sponsor. Another AWT Program is called the Think Manufacturing Student Expo. Working with the Lake County Chambers of Commerce, the Expo is a way for many Lake County students to learn about careers in local businesses and industries. Students attend a trade show where they see featured products and learn about career paths, as well as hearing from human resource professionals about what skills might be required, and from young manufacturers about their own paths to success. AWT operates six different Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEAM)-to-career summer camps called Summer Manufacturing Institute (SMI) for 5th and 6th grade students in Ashtabula County, Lake County, and Geauga County. In Lake and Geauga Co., SMI is assisted by OhioMeansJobs Geauga County, Auburn Career Center, and i-STEM Early College High School, and The Office of Senator Sherrod Brown. In Ashtabula County, SMI is assisted by A-tech, the Ashtabula County Commissioners, Ashtabula Co. Department of Job & Family Services, OhioMeansJobs Ashtabula Co., Great Lakes Newspapers/Printing, Growth Partnership for Ashtabula Co., Grand Valley School District, and The Office of Congressman Dave Joyce. Through SMI, students build science projects and go on field trips to local manufacturing facilities. In this way, students gain an exposure to manufacturing before they choose their high school pathway. AWTs Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)-to-career program allows teachers, administrators, and guidance counselors to tour local manufacturing facilities, gain free, manufacturing specific lesson plans, and lesson plan materials. This program allows teachers, administrators, and guidance counselors to experience manufacturing first-hand and bring those life experiences and manufacturing lesson plans into the classroom. AWT continues to develop manufacturing specific curriculum for students and teachers to use in and outside of the classroom. AWT has partnered with Edufactor to create digital manufacturing resources such as manufacturing videos and lesson-plan library. This tool has been available to all middle and high schools in Lake County and Geauga County.
Through special events such as the annual meeting, educational luncheons, and the charitable golf outing, AWT increases member relationships and shares the mission of AWT.
Being a member of AWT is a commitment to help end the workforce skills gap in manufacturing. AWT members often participate in several or all the AWT educational programs and are committed to helping the next generation of innovators learn their own potential. AWT members often give facility tours, speak to students about manufacturing careers, and participate in local hiring events.
