Organizations Filed Purposes: The mission is to support initiatives and programs within the State of Ohio relating to cognitive impairments and changes through thought leadership, advocacy and collaborative partnerships.

Creating, sustaining and growing Dementia Inclusive Communities in Ohio through the Dementia Friends Ohio Initiative. Dementia friends is now a core component of 4 federal grants here in Ohio. Three are from the Administration for Community Living (ACL); the other, which focuses on the geriatric workforce, is housed in the Health Resources and Service Administration (HRSA). As part of these grants we have: 1. launched a version of Dementia Friends Ohio for the IDD community to serve those living with Down Syndrome, their families and providers alike. While dementia is not inevitable in people living with Down Syndrome as they age, it is far more common for them than for those living with other forms of intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD). Estimates show that close to 30% of people with Down Syndrome in their 50s have dementia; by their 60s this number is closer to 60%; 2.developed a specific dementia Friends program focused on those living alone with Dementia; 3.extended the reach of Dementia Friends to address behavioral issues in a positive manner; and 4. Working in collaboration with the international leaders of the Dementia Friends program in the United Kingdom, we received approval to develop the first interactive web-based Dementia Friends program in the US. Once we learned that our Veterans have unique risk factors for dementia, we worked to developed Veterans specific materials and programs. Our Veterans initiative was a partnership between the Ohio Council for Cognitive Health; the Ohio Department of Veterans Services; the Chalmers Wylie Ambulatory Center; and the US Department of Veterans Affairs through the Louis Stokes Center. The inaugural program was launched in November at the Louis Stokes Center to a standing room only crowd. The Center staff are now actively working to ensure that all employees throughout their care network are trained in dementia at orientation using our joint initiative.

We grew significant partnerships throughout the state and developed additional meaningful ones to ensure both the growth of our initiatives and the scope of our activities. As we expanded our reach into new sectors of the community and began serving new categories of providers, we realized we that we had an opportunity to address and meet the specific needs of diverse groups by tailoring our work to meet their unique challenges and opportunities. We were incredibly careful and cautious in this process since we are outsiders who are not necessarily experts in their fields or part of their cultural groups. We have developed a strict protocol and process for developing these products that has proven to be successful. To date, we have developed and delivered sector specific products and programs for audiences ranging from Ohio Department of Transportation Mobility Managers throughout the state to librarians, lawyers, and financial planners. In addition we have provided targeted dementia sessions for a wide range of groups ranging from elementary, middle, high school and vocational students to museum docents, meals providers, EMS and even Metro Park Rangers. As an example of our expanded reach, in the Fall, we co-hosted a Dementia Friends Ohio day up in Cleveland where information sessions were held in 13 different and diverse locations throughout the city.

Dementia education and outreach to ensure that Ohioans impacted by dementia live the highest quality of life possible full of purpose and meaning even as care needs change. As part of this effort we enhanced our website; launched a monthly newsletter; committed to writing a monthly blog; commissioned and completed 5 short animated videos to introduce topics; grew a consistent Facebook presence; and developed a well-received and frequently downloaded Hand in Hand at Home section of our website; and added additional Quick Tips to offer family caregivers the guidance they have been seeking.
