Organizations Filed Purposes: Hold interscholastic writing tournaments for 7th and 8th graders throughout Ohio. We support the teaching of writing in middle schools by providing and encouraging the use of mentor texts, holistic evaluation, small-group writing workshops, and ongoing writing practice that encourages creativity and student choice.

Hold interscholastic writing tournaments for 7th and 8th graders throughout Ohio to support writing achievement and promote creative writing in middle school.

Hosted 24 district and regional writing tournaments for about 2,700 7th and 8th graders throughout Ohio. When the covid-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of in-person events, we moved our remaining regional tournaments to an online format in order to continue supporting, encouraging, and challenging Ohio's young authors to achieve excellence in writing. In lieu of an in-person state tournament, made impossible by the pandemic, we held a statewide poetry contest. The highest-quality writing from the season is published in a book that is made available to Power of the Pen teams and teachers to serve as mentor texts for middle school writers.
