Organizations Filed Purposes:
To promote and develop the thought of Dietrich von Hildebrand, a 20th century Catholic philosopher, as well as the broader tradition of Christian personalism, through channels including publications, seminars, and digital media.
Publications: The Hildebrand Project was founded to translate and publish the works of Dietrich von Hildebrand. This founding purpose remains central. The Hildebrand Press, the publishing arm of the Hildebrand Project, released the following titles in 2019: "Aesthetics v. II" (February), "The Personalism of John Paul II" (March) "Morality and Situation Ethics" and "Graven Images: Substitutes for True Morality" (September), and "Beauty in the Light of the Redemption" (November).
Academic: The Hildebrand Project supports the engagement and study of Hildebrand through a range of programs. This year saw the 9th annual summer seminar, held on Franciscan University of Steubenville's campus, on the topic, "The Care of the Soul" Rather than continuing with the lecture style presentations of previous years, the 9th annual seminar consisted of more dynamic panel presentations. Advanced Seminar programing was split into two distinct events: (1) A residency for dissertation-writing students, held at Franciscan University, and (2) a colloquium on Hildebrand's "Aesthetics" for a group of 15 invited academics, held at First Things in New York City. The groundwork was laid for further colloquium gatherings on a range of topics. The Hildebrand Project is collaborating with Thales Academy in Raleigh, NC to design a course unit on personalism.
Education and Outreach: In 2019, the Hildebrand Project launched www.alicevonhildebrand.org, a website dedicated to the work of Alice von Hildebrand. The site gathers the prolific work of the wife of Dietrich von Hildebrand; a scholar in her own right, Alice von Hildebrand considered her life's work to consist in disseminating and developing her husband's philosophical ideas. In 2019, 77 articles and 34 videos were published to the site. The Annual Dietrich von Hildebrand Lecture, at Franciscan University, was delivered by NY Times columnist, Ross Douthat, on "The Confusion of American Catholicism." Public events, including our annual summer seminars, are filmed and presented on the Project's YouTube channel. (www.hildebrandproject.org). The website is regularly updated and has been expanded to include up-to-date videos, photos, and information. The Project communicates regularly with social media followers and our email list, beginning a monthly newsletter in August 2019.
