SUMMER DISCOVERY PROGRAM: THE 2019 SUMMER DISCOVERY PROGRAM FOCUSED ON ENCOURAGING LITERACY AND LEARNING DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS TO PREVENT THE "SUMMER SLIDE" OF SKILLS, PARTICULARLY READING, THAT CAN OCCUR IN SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN WHO AREN'T IN A FORMAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENT DURING THOSE MONTHS. CHILDREN WERE GIVEN THE CHOICE OF COMPLETING LEARNING ACTIVITIES OR READING A PREDETERMINED NUMBER OF BOOKS TO COMPLETE THE PROGRAM. LEARNING ACTIVITIES VARIED BY AGE LEVEL AND WERE CORRELATED TO OHIO DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION CONTENT STANDARDS. FOR EXAMPLE, ACTIVITIES LIKE HAVING A DANCE PARTY AND READING A BOOK ABOUT DANCING ENCOMPASSED THE STANDARDS FOR SOCIAL EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND LANGUAGE AND LITERACY DEVELOPMENT. A FREE BOOK AND OTHER REWARDS WERE GIVEN AT INTERVALS TO ENCOURAGE PARTICIPATION. ADDITIONALLY, PROGRAMS WERE SCHEDULED AT ALL LIBRARIES THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER THAT ARE FREE TO THE PUBLIC. PROGRAMS ARE SELECTED TO COINCIDE WITH THE SUMMER DISCOVERY THEME, AND MANY ARE PRESENTED BY SUBJECT AREA EXPERTS OR ENTERTAINERS FROM OUTSIDE OF OUR SYSTEM. IN 2019, THE THEME WAS "A UNIVERSE OF STORIES AND WE WERE FORTUNATE TO BE ABLE TO HOST STORY TELLERS, MUSEUM PRESENTATIONS, PARTNERSHIPS WITH OUR LOCAL PLANETARIUM, AND ANIMAL PRESENTATIONS. THE GRAND FINALE WAS A BREAKFAST FOR YOUTH COMPLETING THE SUMMER DISCOVERY PROGRAM FEATURING LAURA NUMEROFF, AUTHOR OF THE BELOVED "IF YOU GIVE A MOUSE A COOKIE" BOOKS. MORE THAN 600 PEOPLE ATTENDED THIS EVENT. PROGRAM ATTENDANCE INCREASED SIGNIFICANTLY THIS SUMMER. THIS SUMMER WE HAD ALMOST 35,000 ATTEND OUR VARIOUS PROGRAMS.
