Our mission is to interpret the history and natural features of the Zoar Wetland through education and recreation.
EAP is a local non-profit organization that owns and operates the Zoar Wetland in Zoar (Tuscarawas County) Ohio. The Wetland is an 82-acre nature park with nearly 2 miles of walking trails surrounding the 30-acre deep water marsh. Our mission is to interpret the history and natural features of the Zoar Wetland through education and recreation. It is a trail link between the Historic Village of Zoar and the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail. The wetland is maintained with the help of all volunteers and donated money and material.
In 2020 we continued improving the location of the pavilion to enhance the visitors experience. A young EagleScout student solicited large donations of iron and lumber, engineering and design services, and 1,060 hours of labor to build a custom pedestrian bridge across a drainage swale at the 1830 Brewery Cellar. The iron foundation of the bridge was custom designed to span the swale. The walkway is heavy lumber planking. The iron railing is custom made and incorporates the original outline of the oak door cellar entrance into the railing. The entire project was the students own idea and design. He worked all summer to acquire the extensive donations and organized the work parties to install the bridge on cement foundation posts. The bridge allows people to safely access the shoreline to view the wetland from an elevated position. It also enhances our mission to interpret the history of the 1830 Zoar Brewery, of which the original sandstone cellar still stands. The bridge is yet another piece of the total improvement package we have planned for people to safely access our historic structure.
The Zoar Wetland was granted Historic Landmark Status in 2018. The Wetland is finalizing the partnership with Lawrence Township, Zoar Village, Muskingum Watershed, and other local partners to complete a community hiking route through our respective properties. We continued to improve the pavilion with interpretive signage and perennial plantings on the brewery terraces. Due to Covid restrictions we scaled back the public programs in 2020. But, the wetland remained open for public use at their own leisure. The Wetland was host to the UltraRunning event on Sept 4 which saw 111 runners completing either 50mi or 100mi race. The route included included woodland trails through our Wetland, the Village of Zoar, Camp Tuscazoar, and the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail. Our Picnic Pavilion was a designated aid station on the route. Another project completed was a small Boy Scout Project to install new stone steps on the shore line to access the shore dock that also got moved to a better location to eliminate bank erosion.
