THE CORPORATION IS ORGANIZED SOLELY FOR PUBLIC, CHARITABLE AND EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES, INCLUDING SUCH PURPOSES AS THE MAKING OF DISTRIBUTIONS TO THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT AND STATE GOVERNMENTS FOR THE BENEFIT OF ITS NATIONAL PARK AND NATIONAL FOREST LOCATIONS.
BLACK HILLS PARKS & FORESTS ASSOCIATION (BHPFA) IS A COOPERATING/INTERPRETIVE ASSOCIATION AND OFFICIAL NON-PROFIT PARTNER OF THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE AND U.S. FOREST SERVICE, SELLING A CURATED SELECTION OF BOOKS, TOYS, AND GAMES THAT HELP PEOPLE OF ALL AGES ENGAGE WITH AND INTERPRET THE NATURAL WORLD. AS A NON-PROFIT, 501(C)3 ORGANIZATION, A PORTION OF EVERY SINGLE SALE GOES TO SUPPORTING OUR PARTNER NATIONAL PARKS AND FORESTS IN THEIR CRITICAL MISSIONS OF SUSTAINING AND PRESERVING OUR NATURAL LEGACIES. PROCEEDS FROM MERCHANDISE SALES ALLOW BLACK HILLS PARKS & FORESTS ASSOCIATION TO PROVIDE CRITICAL FUNDING THAT HELPS FILL GAPS LEFT BEHIND BY FEDERAL FUNDING SHORTFALLS OR CUMBERSOME PROCUREMENT REGULATIONS. IN 2018, BLACK HILLS PARKS & FORESTS ASSOCIATION DISTRIBUTED OVER $202,000 TO OUR PARTNERS, HELPING FUND THE PRINTING OF PARK NEWSPAPERS, FEES FOR VISITOR EDUCATION PROGRAMS, STIPENDS FOR VISITOR CENTER VOLUNTEERS AND STAFF, FOOD AND SUPPLIES FOR VOLUNTEER AND STAFF, FOOD AND SUPPLIES FOR VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES, INTERPRETIVE/EDUCATIONAL SIGNAGE, VISITOR CENTER BEAUTIFICATION, FOSSIL RESTORATION AND PLACEMENT, AMONG OTHER PROJECTS.BHPFA PARTNERS INCLUDE: WIND CAVE NATIONAL PARK JEWEL CAVE NATIONAL MONUMENT BLACK HILLS NATIONAL FOREST NEBRASKA NATIONAL FORESTS AND GRASSLANDS NATIONAL GRASSLANDS VISITOR CENTER. BLACK HILLS PARKS & FORESTS ASSOCIATION (BHPFA) BEGAN IN 1946 AS THE WIND CAVE LIBRARY ASSOCIATION, A MEMBERSHIP-BASED ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO SUPPORTING INTERPRETIVE, EDUCATIONAL AND SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMS AND SERVICES AT WIND CAVE NATIONAL PARK. THE CURRENT NAME WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1988 TO REFLECT THE ADDITION OF PARTNER AGENCIES. NOW WITH 500 ACTIVE MEMBERS BHPFA HAS PROVIDED OVER $1,075,000 TO PARTNERS OVER THAT 73 YEAR SPAN. COOPERATING ASSOCIATIONS WERE ESTABLISHED BY CONGRESS IN 1936 TO ASSIST PUBLIC LAND AGENCIES IN THE PRODUCTION OF SITE-SPECIFIC PRODUCTS, DISTRIBUTE EDUCATIONAL AND SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATIONS PRODUCED BY PARTNER AGENCIES, DONATE MATERIALS FOR USE IN INTERPRETIVE PROGRAMS AND EXHIBITS, AND WORK TO SECURE GRANTS AND FUNDING. THIS IS ACCOMPLISHED THROUGH PARK STORE SALES, MEMBERSHIP SUPPORT, PUBLICATION AND PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT, RESEARCH FUNDING, AND OTHER EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES. A PORTION OF REVENUE RAISED THROUGH THESE MEANS IS GIVEN BACK TO PARTNER AGENCIES TO SUPPORT EDUCATIONAL AND INTERPRETIVE PROGRAMS.
