The Community Oriented Policing section (COPS) programs support the Alex. Police Dept. (APD) officers working with at risk youth and families in the city to foster an atmosphere of communication and cooperation to improve the overall quality of life for both the youth and their families. The officers engage directly with disadvantaged youth thru meaningful community projects, fun recreational activities and rewards to acknowledge academic effort and achievement. This regular positive interaction between the officers and Alexandria's youth is critical to building trust, promote meaningful relationships and ensuring positive outcomes. This benefits not only the children served by the program, but to the entire Alex. community as well. One of the highly successful parts of the program started with the development of soccer teams at the high school with the international group of students. Due to Covid-19 restrictions this year we only did one season with 2 teams instead of 2 seasons with 7 teams as we did last year. The students grades have improved and a long lasting trust has developed between the Police Officers and students.
This program normally enables 20 Alexandria children to attend a week of summer camp in Southern Virginia at the Alexandria Police Youth Camp (APYC) on the Chesapeake Bay. The APYC owns the camp property and operates the summer camp with volunteer officers on their own time and in conjunction with the YMCA staff. While Covid-19 prevented children from attending camp this year the money was used by the APYC to improve the conditions of the food service building for future years.
Tuition assistance program for the APD officers, to encourage continuing education to enhance job performance and ability for additional responsibilities / promotion within the department. The officer must apply in advance, be approved by our committee and complete the course with satisfactory grades to obtain our maximum reimbursement of $1000 per semester.
