Organizations Filed Purposes:
Developing relationships with families to see the Chirilagua neighborhood transformed by Christ. Casa Chirilagua builds relationships with neighbors to develop youth, strengthen families, equip leaders, and engage the community to participate in holistic transformation.
Kids Club - In 2019, Kids Club placed particular emphasis on creating a healthy space for students to flourish. From January to June of 2019 40 students were enrolled in the after-school program and from September to December of 2019 39 students were enrolled. They received daily academic support and services. Kids Club programming includes a nutritious snack, math support, homework help, reading support, computer practice in school-based math and reading programs, life skills activities, Bible-based character development lessons, activities in the arts, physical movement time, writing workshops, and monthly experience and exposure reward field trips. Summer Club is a three-week program in July which, in 2019, targeted developing reading and math skills and involved 9 students who were identified by their teachers as needing additional summer support. The program included one hour of reading and math support Monday through Friday, with an average of one volunteer per two students, allowing for personalized attention to meet each student's needs and help them grow in areas of learning deficits. Grade level reading and math skills were practiced and strengthened through interactive, hands on small group and individual activities. Thanks to support from a Mount Vernon Community School teacher, students at Summer Club also had the opportunity to be exposed to coding programs and worked in partners to practice coding skills.Casa Friends Camp was a one weeklong full day camp in August of 2019 for fourteen 1st-5th grade students, and offered themed activities from arts to nature, from science to sports, and a bible camp. Daily activities involved a team building activity, communal and individual art projects, and Bible lessons. Our summer camp was supported by two local organizations. The Four Mile Run Nature Conservatory did a daily nature experience for the students, and Downtown Baptist Church ran a morning Bible camp. We were supported by an average of 8 volunteers a day. Students also participated in one field trip to the local pool.
Mentoring - Casa Chirilagua's Mentoring Program is continuing to expand with quality-based mentorships. Casa Chirilagua's Mentoring Program is continually expanding and creating more quality based mentorships. From January to December 2019, 13 new mentors were added to the program. The Mentoring Program had a total of 66 active participants in the year 2019. In December 2019, mentors continued to meet with their mentees on a weekly basis for at least one hour per week. At the end of 2019, over 1,200 hours of service were recorded by 52 mentors in the fiscal year. During the 2019 fiscal year, three mentor workshops, two mentor-mentee events and one mentor social gathering event was held. Mentors were able to dive deeper in their relationships with mentees and other mentors in the program.
Soy Lider Adult Programs - As community members, Casa adult programs help fellow neighbors define the community's needs and priorities through daily relationships in order to design creative, culturally relevant, sustainable solutions. The adult programs enable networking and partnership with existing community organizations.Casa Chirilagua continues to partner with a variety of organizations and nonprofits in the City of Alexandria and throughout northern Virginia.In February, April, October and December of 2019, Casa Chirilagua hosted the monthly Mt. Vernon Community School PTA (MVCS PTA) meeting at the community center allowing for a successful representation and attendance of parents who live in the Chirilagua neighborhood. From January to June and from October to December 2019 Casa Chirilagua entered a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Mount Vernon Community School (MVCS) PTA parent group "Padres Activos'' to host their Thursday morning adult ESL classes. In January 2019, Casa Chirilagua entered an MOU with Nueva Vida to host a one-time event increasing accessibility to healthcare through mammogram screenings, Nova Salud consultations, blood pressure screenings, and blood glucose testing.In January 2019, Casa Chirilagua and Alexandria City Public School's Family and Community Engagement Center (ACPS/FACE) entered an MOU to hold an event where Casa family members and community members connected on the topic of the High School Project-a project organized by the Alexandria City Public Schools. Also, in October 2019 family members and community members connected on the topic of EQUITY-a project organized by Alexandria City Public Schools.In February and March 2019, Casa Chirilagua and CASA Inc. entered an MOU where monthly immigration related sessions were held in the community center, as community members expressed interest on this topic.In January through March and from August to December 2019, Casa Chirilagua continued its partnership and MOU with the Center for Alexandria's Children (CAC) to host CAC's weekly preschool playgroup offered to parents and children in the Chirilagua community. In September 2019, Restoration City Church started an Adult Bible Study Program every Monday from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm.
