Organizations Filed Purposes:
NASBE PROMOTES AND SUPPORTS STATE BOARDS OF EDUCATION AS THEY LEAD THE EFFORT TO ENSURE A QUALITY EDUCATION FOR ALL CHILDREN THROUGH VARIOUS ACTIVITIES, WHICH INCLUDE PUBLICATIONS, RESEARCH, TRAINING, AND MEETINGS.
SOCIAL, EMOTIONAL AND ACADEMIC DEVELOPMENT STUDENTS' SOCIAL, EMOTIONAL, AND PHYSICAL WELLNESS ARE CENTRAL TO THEIR ABILITY TO LEARN AND ACHIEVE ACADEMIC SUCCESS. NASBE HAS PRIORITIZED BUILDING OUR MEMBERS CONTENT KNOWLEDGE AND POLICY ANALYSIS STRATEGIES AROUND THE INTERCONNECTEDNESS OF THESE FACTORS TO TAKE A MORE COORDINATED, SYSTEMATIC, AND INTENTIONAL APPROACH TO POLICY DEVELOPMENT. TO BUILD STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION KNOWLEDGE AND CAPACITY AROUND THIS WORK, NASBE PRODUCED IN-PERSON CONFERENCE SESSIONS AND WEBINARS ON COHESIVE COMMUNICATIONS, DATA ANALYSIS, YOUTH ENGAGEMENT, UNDERSTANDING OF THE SCIENCE OF LEARNING, AND WORKING WITH COMMUNITY PARTNERS. NASBE FURTHER PUBLISHED RESOURCES ADVISING STATE BOARDS ON ISSUES OF SCHOOL HEALTH, ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITY, PERSONNEL ENRICHMENT, AND CAREER READINESS. WE REGULARLY ATTENDED GATHERINGS OF OTHER NATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS TO ELEVATE THE PERSPECTIVE OF STATE BOARDS IN POLICY DISCUSSIONS, AND WE LEVERAGED PARTNER RELATIONSHIPS, RESOURCES, AND INSIGHTS TO PROVIDE INFORMED TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TO OUR MEMBERS ON ISSUES PERTAINING TO STUDENTS' HOLISTIC DEVELOPMENT.
EARLY LEARNING HIGH-QUALITY EARLY LEARNING REQUIRES A HIGH-QUALITY WORKFORCE WITH SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS. TO BETTER SUPPORT THIS UNDER-RESOURCED AND COMPLEX WORKFORCE, STATE EDUCATION AGENCIES (SEAS) AND STATE BOARDS OF EDUCATION CAN USE THEIR POLICY LEVERS TO INVESTIGATE AND INFLUENCE WORKFORCE QUALITY IN FOUR AREAS: QUALIFICATIONS AND LICENSURE, PREPARATION PROGRAMS, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, AND COMPENSATION. TO TAKE THE NEXT STEP IN FACILITATING THE DEVELOPMENT OF A ROBUST, WELL-DEVELOPED ASSEMBLY OF EDUCATORS AND ADMINISTRATORS, NASBE AWARDED STIPENDS TO SEVEN STATES TO INVESTIGATE AND IMPROVE EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION WORKFORCE CONDITIONS IN THEIR STATES. FUNDED THROUGH GRANTS FROM THE FOUNDATION FOR CHILD DEVELOPMENT AND W.K. KELLOGG FOUNDATION, THIS PROJECT REIGNITES NASBE'S EARLY LEARNING WORK AND ESTABLISHES A STATE NETWORK TASKED WITH DEVELOPING, REVISING, AND ADOPTING EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION POLICIES THAT OTHER STATE BOARDS CAN REPLICATE.
DEEPER LEARNING AND EQUITY NASBE'S DEEPER LEARNING INITIATIVE PROVIDES STATE POLICYMAKERS THE ESSENTIAL TOOLS TO MAKE SMART DECISIONS ON WAYS TO PREPARE MORE STUDENTS FOR COLLEGE, CAREER, AND CIVIC SUCCESS. DEEPER LEARNING DELIVERS STRATEGIES FOR EDUCATORS TO CONVEY THE SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE STUDENTS NEED TO SUCCEED IN THE 21ST CENTURY. THESE COMPETENCIES INCLUDE THE ABILITY TO: MASTER ACADEMIC CONTENT; THINK CRITICALLY AND SOLVE COMPLEX PROBLEMS; WORK COLLABORATIVELY; COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY; AND LEARN HOW TO LEARN. POLICIES SUPPORTING THESE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES-INCLUDING THOSE RELATED TO ACCOUNTABILITY, STANDARDS, ASSESSMENTS, TEACHER PREPARATION, AND TIME FLEXIBILITY-HAVE MANY STATE IMPLICATIONS. NASBE WILL SUPPORT STATE BOARDS AND OTHER STATE STAKEHOLDERS AS THEY NAVIGATE THESE AND OTHER ISSUES RELATED TO PROVIDING STUDENTS DEEPER LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES. THIS WORK IS SUPPORTED BY A GRANT FROM THE WILLIAM AND FLORA HEWLETT FOUNDATION. IN ORDER TO PROVIDE STATE POLICYMAKERS WITH A MORE COMPREHENSIVE UNDERSTANDING OF DEEPER LEARNING, NASBE WILL: 1.RAISE THE AWARENESS OF STATE BOARD MEMBERS ON THE DEEPER LEARNING CONCEPT; 2.CONVENE A DEEPER LEARNING STATE POLICY ACTION GROUP TO SERVE AS A THINK TANK FOR STATE BOARDS AROUND POLICY; AND 3.BUILD STATE POLICYMAKER CAPACITY TO UNDERSTAND AND ACT ON ISSUES RELATED TO DEEPER LEARNING.
