INTRODUCTION:2019 PROVED TO BE A TRANSITIONAL YEAR FOR THE EDUCATION AND ENGAGEMENT TEAM WITH NEW STAFF, REVIVED PROGRAMS, AND FORWARD-LOOKING GOALS. DEVELOPING COLLABORATIVE RELATIONSHIPS THAT ESTABLISH PROFESSIONAL TIES BETWEEN PEERS, LIKE-MISSIONED ORGANIZATIONS, DIVERSE AUDIENCES, CONTENT EXPERTS AND SCHOLARS, AND FUNDING SOURCES WAS THE PRIMARY GOAL THAT DEFINED THE MUSEUM'S COMMUNITY PROGRAMS AND STRATEGIC OUTREACH THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. EDUCATION STAFF REPRESENTED THE MUSEUM AT THE 1ST ANNUAL NATIONAL WOMEN'S HISTORY ALLIANCE NETWORKING CONFERENCE IN SAN DIEGO, CA, IN JANUARY, AND EXHIBITED AT THE NATIONAL COUNCIL FOR HISTORY EDUCATORS IN WASHINGTON, D.C. IN THE SPRING. STAFF ALSO ATTENDED THE ALLIANCE OF AMERICAN MUSEUMS ANNUAL MEETING IN NEW ORLEANS IN MAY, FOLLOWED BY THE ASSOCIATION FOR STATE AND LOCAL HISTORY'S ANNUAL MEETING IN PHILADELPHIA IN LATE SUMMER. THE TEAM ALSO MADE HEADLONG PROGRESS IN BUILDING UP EACH OF THE FIVE AREAS OF THE MUSEUM'S EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS: DIGITAL LEARNING, COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT, ACADEMIC PROGRAMMING, PRINT AND PUBLICATIONS, AND THE STUDY COLLECTION AND ARCHIVES. DIGITAL LEARNING:THE EDUCATION STAFF MAINTAINED A ROBUST OUTPUT OF DIGITAL LEARNING RESOURCES FOR THE MUSEUM'S WEBSITE, REVAMPING THE ELECTRONIC FIELD TRIPS PROGRAMMING WITH UPDATED RESEARCH, CONTRIBUTING NEW ARTICLES AND DEDICATED TOPICAL RESOURCE PAGES, CURATING FRESH VIRTUAL EXHIBITS, WORKING COLLABORATIVELY WITH EDUCATORS TO PRODUCE NEW CLASSROOM-READY LESSON PLANS, AND INCREASING THE NUMBER OF BIOGRAPHIES CONTRIBUTED MONTHLY TO THE MUSEUM'S ONLINE COLLECTION. AS A RESULT, THE MUSEUM'S WEBSITE HAS SEEN THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF VISITORS SINCE FIRST ESTABLISHING A DIGITAL PRESENCE IN 2006. OVER 3M VISITORS THIS CALENDAR YEAR ALONE FROM OVER NINE INTERNATIONAL DESTINATIONS, INCLUDING CANADA, THE UNITED KINGDOM, INDIA, AUSTRALIA, FRANCE, GERMANY, THE PHILIPPINES, AND SPAIN, HAVE ACCESSED THE MUSEUM'S VIRTUAL COMPENDIUM OF WOMEN'S HISTORY RESOURCES. THE BIOGRAPHIES COLLECTION REMAINS THE MOST UTILIZED SECTION OF THE WEBSITE BY FAR, ENLIVENED NOW BY THE ADDITION OF THE MONTHLY "FAB FIVE" CURATED SELECTION OF THEMED WOMEN'S STORIES.HERE ARE MORE DIGITAL LEARNING HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE YEAR:SOJOURNER TRUTH, A VIRTUAL EXHIBIT CURATED BY NWHM PREDOCTORAL FELLOW AND PUBLISHED AT THE BEGINNING OF FEBRUARY, WAS FEATURED ON GOOGLE'S HOMEPAGE ON FEBRUARY 1ST REACHING NEARLY A HALF-MILLION VISITORS IN ONE DAY! THE SHEER VOLUME OF TRAFFIC DRIVEN TO THE MUSEUM'S WEBSITE CRASHED THE SITE BY 9AM EST, BUT SERVICE WAS QUICKLY RESTORED AND STRENGTHENED. THE FELLOW WAS FEATURED IN HER UNIVERSITY'S STUDENT NEWSPAPER AND PRAISED BY HER DISSERTATION ADVISER FOR HAVING TOUCHED MORE PEOPLE WITH HER WORK IN ONE DAY THAN I'VE TOUCHED IN MY ENTIRE CAREER." THE ADVISOR WENT ON TO THANK THE NWHM FOR PROVIDING THE STUDENT AND OTHER FUTURE HISTORIANS AND MUSEUM PROFESSIONALS WITH UNIQUE OPPORTUNITIES TO GROW PROFESSIONALLY VIA THE MUSEUM'S ACADEMIC PROGRAMS OFFERINGS. TWO EXHIBITS CURATED BY NWHM EDUCATION STAFF, "GETTING WITH THE PROGRAM AND "INVENTIVE WOMEN," WERE SELECTED TO BE A PART OF A NEW 2019 GOOGLE ARTS & CULTURE INITIATIVE CALLED "ONCE UPON A TRY." MORE THAN 110 INSTITUTIONS FROM OVER 18 COUNTRIES WERE SPECIFICALLY CHOSEN BY GOOGLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE PROJECT AS A GLOBAL CELEBRATION OF SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND INGENUITY. THE GLOBAL LAUNCH OF THE PROJECT WAS ON MARCH 6TH IN WASHINGTON, D.C., WITH STAFF MEMBERS FROM THE TEAM IN ATTENDANCE FOR THE CELEBRATION. A NEW ONLINE RESOURCE PAGE WAS CREATED IN COLLABORATION WITH THE AMERICAN ROSIE MOVEMENT, ARCHIVING ORAL HISTORIES THAT DOCUMENT THE STORIES OF WOMEN INVOLVED IN THE "ROSIE THE RIVETER" CAMPAIGN DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR. THE RESOURCE WAS COMPLETED AND AVAILABLE TO VISITORS IN TIME FOR THE 75TH COMMEMORATION OF D-DAY IN JUNE. TWO NEW VIRTUAL EXHIBITS WERE PUBLISHED IN THE NEWLY LAUNCHED STAR-SPANGLED HEARTS SERIES COMMEMORATING WOMEN'S CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE FIVE BRANCHES OF MILITARY SERVICE DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR. "WOMEN AIRFORCE SERVICE PILOTS OF WORLD WAR II AND "THE WAVES OF WORLD WAR II" ARE THE FIRST EXHIBITS IN A SERIES OF FIVE THAT WILL BE COMPLETED TO MARK THE 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE END OF WORLD WAR II IN 2020. ON THE HEELS OF NEW RESEARCH INDICATING THAT STUDENTS ARE BETTER ABLE TO REMEMBER, EMPATHIZE, AND SYNTHESIZE HISTORICAL EVENTS AND INFORMATION WHEN PRESENTED WITH IMAGES AND LEARNING RESOURCES IN COLOR, THE EDUCATION STAFF EMBARKED ON A NEW COLORIZATION PROJECT TO REPLACE AS MANY FORMER PREDOMINANTLY BLACK-AND-WHITE RESOURCES CURRENTLY ON THE WEBSITE WITH NEWLY COLORIZED HISTORIC PHOTOS. THIS IS A MULTI-YEAR, TIME-INTENSIVE PROJECT THAT WILL BE APPLIED GRADUALLY TO THE WEBSITE'S HOLDINGS. THE "FOR EDUCATORS, BY EDUCATORS" PROJECT CONCLUDED WITH 13 NEW VIRTUAL LESSON PLANS AND RESOURCES TO BE SHARED WITH K-12 EDUCATORS THROUGHOUT THE 2019-2020 ACADEMIC YEAR VIA THE EDUCATION TEAM'S MONTHLY EDUCATORS' E-NEWSLETTER. THIS YEAR'S PROGRAM WAS OVERSEEN FOR THE FIRST TIME BY AN NWHM SUMMER EDUCATOR FELLOWAN ELEMENTARY-SCHOOL EDUCATOR WHO OVERSAW THE ENTIRE OPERATION OF THE PROGRAM, BUT ALSO EDITED EACH SUBMITTED LESSON PLAN FOR CLARITY, CONTENT, HISTORICAL ACCURACY, AND ALIGNMENT TO APPLICABLE NATIONAL SOCIAL STUDIES STANDARDS. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT:WITH THE FEBRUARY 4TH ONBOARDING OF THE MUSEUM'S NEW EDUCATION PROGRAMS MANAGER, COMMUNITY PROGRAMMING HAS SEEN AN UPTICK IN PLANNING AND PARTICIPATION IN THE CURRENT YEAR. BY FAR THE TEAM'S MOST SUCCESSFUL PROGRAM, THE NEWLY LAUNCHED "DETERMINED TO RISE": WOMEN'S HISTORICAL ACTIVISM FOR EQUAL RIGHTS TRAVELING LECTURE SERIES IN COMMEMORATION OF THE UPCOMING CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION OF THE 19TH AMENDMENT'S RATIFICATION IN 2020, HAS ALLOWED THE MUSEUM TO GROW ITS EXTERNAL AND BRAND AWARENESS, BUILD COMMUNITIES OF COLLABORATIVE PARTNERS, AND (RE-)INTRODUCE ITSELF TO A GROWING BODY OF SCHOLARS IN THE FIELDS OF WOMEN'S HISTORY, AMERICAN HISTORY, GENDER STUDIES, AND CIVIC EDUCATION. IN ADDITION, THE EDUCATION TEAM IS FOSTERING A NEW PARTNERSHIP WITH THE GIRL SCOUTS, NATION'S CAPITAL REGION, BY CREATING NEW VIRTUAL RESOURCES, BADGE-EARNING WORKSHOPS, AND COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES THAT WILL PROMOTE AND GROW THIS CRUCIAL CONNECTION FOR THE MUSEUM.HERE ARE MORE COMMUNITY PROGRAMMING HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE YEAR:BY POPULAR DEMAND, THE UNITED STATES HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL MUSEUM REQUESTED AN EXTENSION OF WHAT WAS ORIGINALLY A 5-EVENT PANEL DISCUSSION SERIES OVER 2018-19 IN COLLABORATION WITH THE NWHM TITLED, "HOW DID AMERICAN WOMEN ACT?: HEROISM ON THE HOME FRONT?" THE TRAVELING SERIES RETURNED FOR 2 ADDITIONAL DATES IN 2019, AS WELL AS 2 MORE DATES IN 2020. NWHM'S DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION, SERVES AS THE MODERATOR FOR THE PANELS. EDUCATION STAFF ONCE AGAIN SERVED AS JUDGES FOR BOTH REGIONAL AND NATIONAL NATIONAL HISTORY DAY CONTESTS IN 2019 AND PRESENTED THE NATIONAL WOMEN'S HISTORY MUSEUM AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING PROJECTS IN WOMEN'S HISTORY AT BOTH CONTESTS. NWHM PREDOCTORAL FELLOW WAS INTERVIEWED ON COMCAST NEWSMAKERS AFTER THE PUBLICATION OF THE SOJOURNERS TRUTH VIRTUAL EXHIBIT. EDUCATION STAFF EXHIBITED AT THE CITY OF ALEXANDRIA'S 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF D-DAY COMMEMORATION EVENT. A NEW POP-UP EXHIBIT BASED ON THE WASPS VIRTUAL EXHIBIT WAS DEBUTED. THE STAFF ALSO PRESENTED A POP-UP EXHIBIT AT THE NATIONAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA COMMUNITY CONCERT AT HOWARD UNIVERSITY, "A CELEBRATION OF THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF WOMEN'S SUFFRAGE," ON OCTOBER 25TH. THE EDUCATION STAFF HOSTED A VIRGINIA CONGRESSMAN AND REPRESENTATIVES FROM HIS STAFF AT THE OFFICE. THEY CAME TO DISCUSS COLLABORATIVE OPPORTUNITIES AND TO VIEW THE NEW EXHIBIT IN THE ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICE'S "GALLERY." EDUCATION STAFF REPRESENTED THE MUSEUM AT THE 5TH ANNUAL WOMEN'S CONFERENCE AT GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY IN ARLINGTON, VA ON OCTOBER 12TH AT THE INVITATION OF THE CONGRESSMAN.
