Organizations Filed Purposes: The Mission of PHAB is to "Advance and Transform public health practice by championing performance improvement, strong infrastructure, and innovation" for a vision of "a high-performing governmental public health system that supports people living their healthiest lives." As of June 2020, 517 health departments of varying size and jurisdiction were formally engaged with the Public Health Accreditation Board's voluntary accreditation process with 363 of those having achieved 5-year accredited status and 13 health departments receiving Not Accredited status. The accredited health departments represent a total population served of 357,527,470.

Accreditation Program: The Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) is the voluntary national accreditation program for tribal, state, local, and territorial, governmental public health departments. Through the national accreditation program, PHAB works to transform the public health system by (1) setting standards and measures that define excellence in public health department performance, (2) encouraging public health departments to engage in quality improvement, (3) expanding the evidence base of public health practice, and ultimately (4) improving the population's health. The Accreditation program includes programmatic modules that have their own standards and measures for Vital Records/Health Statistics Units (VRHS), and US Army Public Health installations. These are both part of the Accreditation Program and follow the same workflow.

Public Health National Center on Innovation: PHNCI supports the development, testing and dissemination of models of innovation and serves as the coordinating body for a number of allied, national initiatives being applied at health departments across the country. These innovations will serve as pathways for the nation's health departments as they work to be conveners, providers and strategists that our communities need to improve health and well-being.

Education Services: PHAB provides training on the accreditation process that is thorough and appropriate for all applicants. PHAB also develops specific training sessions on the selection, preparation, and the role and functions of the Accreditation staff. Education is provided based on the needs of the target audience (Site Visitors, Accreditation Coordinators, other stakeholders).
