TO SUPPORT AND STRENGTHEN THE SALVATION ARMY'S EFFORTS TO WORK HAND IN HAND WITH COMMUNITIES TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH, ECONOMIC, AND SPIRITUAL CONDITIONS OF THE POOR THROUGHOUT THE WORLD.
TO PROMOTE COMMUNITY-BASED SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT EFFORTS THROUGH THE INTL. SALVATION ARMY.
1) EARTHQUAKE RESPONSE IN PAPUA NEW GUINEA: FOLLOWING THE 2018 EARTHQUAKE THAT AFFECTED REMOTE AREAS OF PAPUA NEW GUINEA, THE SALVATION ARMY PARTNERED WITH SEVERAL LOCAL CHURCHES TO ASSIST IN REBUILDING AFFECTED COMMUNITIES. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH CATHOLIC HEALTH SERVICES, THE MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH CLINIC WAS RECONSTRUCTED. THE ANGLICAN CHURCH IN PAPUA NEW GUINEA WAS SUPPORTED BY INSTALLING RAIN-WATER HARVESTING EQUIPMENT IN 12 DIFFERENT LOCATIONS THROUGHOUT THE AFFECTED AREA. TWO SCHOOLS WERE REBUILT IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE BAPTIST UNION. THE NEW CONSTRUCTION MAKES USE OF EARTHQUAKE-RESISTANT MATERIALS AND IS DESIGNED TO MAKE SPACES SAFER FOR STUDENTS AND STAFF. IN ADDITION, SUPPORT WAS OFFERED THROUGH THE LIVELIHOODS RESTORATION AND LITERACY PROGRAMS TO SUPPORT LOCAL INFRASTRUCTURE (SOLAR POWERED PUMPS, ETC.), AND TO ASSIST THE BADLY-DAMAGED AGRICULTURE SECTOR. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE UNITED CHURCH IN THE HELA REGION, SIX (6) TEACHERS' HOUSES WERE REBUILT. THESE HOMES ARE ESSENTIAL TO MAINTAINING A SUFFICIENT NUMBER OF TEACHERS IN THE COMMUNITY.2) ASSISTANCE FOR REFUGEES AND MIGRANTS: IN VENEZUELA, THE SALVATION ARMY PROVIDED EMERGENCY FOOD PARCELS AND VARIOUS HYGIENE SUPPLIES FOR THE UNEXPECTED REFUGEES FLEEING ONGOING SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC CONDITIONS IN VENEZUELA. IN TIJUANA, MEXICO, FOOD FOR 8,000 PEOPLE WAS PROVIDED ALONG WITH PERSONAL HYGIENE SUPPLIES, BACK PACKS, AND OTHER HUMANITARIAN ITEMS FOR THE 'MIGRANT CARAVAN' CRISIS IN THAT AREA. FOOD AID AND VARIOUS NON-FOOD ITEMS WERE SUPPLIED TO REFUGEES IN MAKOTIPOKO AND BETOU (CONGO BRAZZAVILLE) WHO FLED TRIBAL VIOLENCE IN THAT AREA. IN THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO, AN ASSESSMENT FOUND THAT INTERNALLY-DISPLACED PERSONS WERE SUFFERING FROM NEAR-STARVATION-LEVEL CONDITIONS DUE TO A PROLONGED PERIOD IN WHICH SUFFICIENT FOOD WAS UNAVAILABLE IN THE CAMPS. THE SALVATION ARMY PROVIDED NUTRITIOUS FOOD FOR THE MOST VULNERABLE PEOPLE IN THE CAMPS. IN BRAZIL, WHERE VENEZUELAN REFUGEES FLED, SAWSO PROVIDED CHILD PROTECTION SERVICES AND PSYCHOSOCIAL SUPPORT TO REFUGEE CHILDREN. IN NIGERIA, SAWSO PROVIDED SUPPORT FOR FARMERS AFFECTED BY THE MIGRANT HERDSMEN CONFLICT. THIS INCLUDED DELIVERY OF FOOD AND OTHER ESSENTIAL ITEMS (INCLUDING CLOTHING, FOOTWEAR, SLEEPING MATES, MOSQUITO NETS, AND HYGIENE ARTICLES) TO 600 OF THE MOST VULNERABLE DISPLACED FAMILIES IN THE ABAGENA CAMPS IN BENUE STATE, NIGERIA. IN KYANGWALI, UGANDA, THE SALVATION ARMY PROVIDED SUPPORT IN HOPES OF PREVENTING THE SPREAD OF DISEASE (INCLUDING THE POTENTIAL OF EBOLA) AMONG REFUGEE FAMILIES LIVING IN THAT AREA. KEY ACTIVITIES INCLUDED INSTALLING DRAINABLE LATRINES, WATER HARVESTING EQUIPMENT, HAND WASHING STATIONS, AND OTHER SANITATION ITEMS AT SCHOOLS AND CLINICS IN THE AFFECTED AREA.3) EARTHQUAKE, TORNADO, AND TSUNAMI RESPONSES: FOLLOWING A DEVASTATING EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI IN INDONESIA, THE SALVATION ARMY PROVIDED EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE BY PROVIDING FOOD AND MEDICAL/MEDICATION SUPPLIES TO SURVIVORS. IN ADDITION, ROUGHLY 4,000 SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN RECEIVED SCHOOL SUPPLIES, ENABLING THEM TO RETURN TO SCHOOL AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. IN HAVANA, CUBA, FOLLOWING A DEVASTATING TORNADO, COMMUNITIES AND NEIGHBORHOODS AFFECTED RECEIVED EMERGENCY FOOD SUPPLIES AS WELL AS COOKING UTENSILS, BLANKETS, MATTRESSES, HYGIENE KITS, AND OTHER PERSONAL CARE ITEMS. IN MAIDUGURI, NIGERIA, AN ESTIMATED 500 FAMILIES IN THE BOKO HARAM AREA RECEIVED RELIEF MATERIALS. EMERGENCY FOOD PARCELS WERE GIVEN TO SURVIVORS OF THE VICIOUS FLOODING IN THE AFTERMATH OF CYCLONE IDAI IN MOZAMBIQUE ALONG WITH BLANKETS, MOSQUITO NETS, KITCHEN SETS, AND OTHER NECESSITIES WERE PROVIDED TO AN ESTIMATED 500 VULNERABLE FAMILIES. IN MIZORAM, INDIA, ROOFING SHEETS AND OTHER BUILDING MATERIALS WERE PROVIDED TO OVER 183 FAMILIES FOLLOWING A DEVASTATING LANDSLIDE, ALLOWING COMMUNITIES TO BEGIN REBUILDING OR REPAIRING THEIR HOMES. EMERGENCY FLOOD RELIEF, CONSISTING OF FOOD SUPPLIES, MEDICINES, KITCHEN KITS, BLANKETS, SLEEPING PADS, AND CLEANING SUPPLIES WERE PROVIDED TO AN ESTIMATED 500 FAMILIES WHO LOST EVERYTHING TO THE FLOODS IN GUJARAT STATE, INDIA.4) DROUGHT AND FAMINE RELIEF: IN ZIMBABWE, FOOD ASSISTANCE WAS PROVIDED TO NEARLY 2,000 FAMILIES AFFECTED BY THE DROUGHT, CAUSING A MASSIVE CROP FAILURE DURING A FAMINE AND DROUGHT THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY.5) FOOD AND HYGIENE ASSISTANCE: A GROUP OF MEN IN UGANDA TRAFFICKED IN KUWAIT AWAIT COURT PROCEEDINGS TO SETTLE THEIR IMMIGRATION STATUS, ALLOWING THEM TO RETURN TO UGANDA. THE SALVATION ARMY PROVIDED THIS GROUP OF MEN WITH FOOD AND HYGIENE SUPPLIES.6) SCHOOL REINFORCEMENT AND FEEDING: VIRTUAL ECONOMIC COLLAPSE ACCOMPANIED BY THE UNREST AND VIOLENCE IN NICARAGUA CONTINUES TO CAUSE SUFFERING TO THE MOST VULNERABLE FAMILIES AND INDIVIDUALS. IN RESPONSE, AN ESTIMATED 370 FAMILIES IN THESE COMMUNITIES WERE PROVIDED FOOD AND HYGIENE ITEMS. IN ADDITION, AN ESTIMATED 50 AT-RISK SCHOOL CHILDREN RECEIVED BOOKS AND UNIFORMS.7) EMERGENCY AND DISASTER CENTRES: IN TOKYO, JAPAN, A CHURCH (CORPS) BUILDING WAS RENOVATED INTO A REGIONAL EMERGENCY AND DISASTER CENTER WHICH ALSO SERVES AS A SMALL CONFERENCE CENTER. ADDITIONALLY, THIS FACILITY CAN SERVE AS AN EMERGENCY SHELTER FOR POTENTIAL FUTURE DISASTERS. IN CHINA, THE SALVATION ARMY PROVIDED SUPPORT TO ESTABLISH A PERMANENT EMERGENCY RESPONSE HUB IN CHENGDU, SICHUAN, CHINA. THE HUB WILL SERVE AS A ONE-STOP TRAINING, RESPONSE, AND COORDINATION CENTER IN THE EVENT OF THE NEXT EMERGENCY.
SAWSO'S HEALTH PROGRAMS ARE DESIGNED TO HELP END POVERTY AND IMPROVE QUALITY OF LIFE. THE SALVATION ARMY SERVES THE POOR AND VULNERABLE BY IMPLEMENTING PROGRAMS THAT ENHANCE HEALTH SERVICE QUALITY AND INCREASE ACCESS TO COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICES AT SALVATION ARMY-OPERATED HOSPITALS AND CLINICS. PROGRAM FOCUS AREAS ARE: MATERNAL, CHILD AND ADOLESCENT HEALTH; HIV TREATMENT AND PREVENTION; NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASES; COMMUNITY HEALTH AND HEALTH FACILITIES.IN SRI LANKA, SAWSO CONTINUES TO SUPPORT SALVATION ARMY STAFF DOING COMMUNITY OUTREACH IN AN AREA BESET WITH DEADLY KIDNEY DISEASE, IDENTIFYING CASES EARLY AND REFERRING THEM FOR LIFE-SAVING TREATMENT. THE PROJECT CONDUCTS OVER 200 MOBILE CLINIC SESSIONS IN RURAL AREAS EACH YEAR, AIMING TO SCREEN MORE THAN 40,000 PEOPLE ANNUALLY FOR THE DISEASE. THOSE WHO TEST POSITIVE ARE REFERRED TO MINISTRY OF HEALTH FOR FOLLOW UP, WHICH CAN INCLUDE DIALYSIS AT A GOVERNMENT HOSPITAL. IN HAITI, SAWSO SUPPORTS AN OUTPATIENT CLINIC IN A PORT-AU-PRINCE SLUM AND PLANS CONTINUE TO REBUILD A SMALL SALVATION ARMY HOSPITAL IN THE SOUTHERN PART OF THE COUNTRY.IN PARTNERSHIP WITH A FOUNDATION, SAWSO IS SUPPORTING THE SALVATION ARMY'S PROVISION OF PRIMARY HEALTH CARE TO THE RURAL POOR THROUGH OUTREACH PROGRAMS IN ZAMBIA'S UNDERSERVED SOUTHERN PROVINCE. WITH ENGINEERING MINISTRIES INTERNATIONAL, SAWSO IS WORKING WITH A HISTORIC MISSION STATION - INCLUDING A LARGE HOSPITAL - TO UPGRADE OF THE AGING INFRASTRUCTURE THROUGHOUT THE PROPERTY.
SAWSO HAS BEGUN WORKING WITH WOMEN IN CONGO BRAZZAVILLE TO SET UP A SAVINGS GROUP PROGRAM IN A REMOTE REGION LACKING FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS. THE SAVINGS GROUPS WILL HELP THE WOMEN TO SAVE MONEY SO THAT THEY ARE FINANCIALLY STABLE WHEN THEY CANNOT HARVEST DURING THE DRY SEASON. SAWSO IS ALSO WORKING TO TRAIN THE WOMEN IN NEW AGRICULTURAL TECHNIQUES TO INCREASE THEIR YIELDS.ADDITIONALLY, SAWSO IS SUPPORTING A LIVESTOCK AND SAVINGS GROUP PROGRAM IN TANZANIA FOR THOSE AT RISK FOR, OR HAVE ALREADY BEEN AFFECTED BY, FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION (FGM). THE PROGRAM AIMS TO EDUCATE THE COMMUNITY ABOUT THE PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL DANGERS OF FGM, WHILE EMPOWERING AT-RISK GIRLS WITH OPPORTUNITIES TO EARNING A LIVELIHOOD THROUGH A GOAT ROTATION PROJECT.SAWSO STARTED WORTH PROGRAMS IN THREE NEW KENYAN COMMUNITIES THIS YEAR. THE WORTH PROJECT ASSISTS WOMEN THROUGH LITERACY, BUSINESS TRAINING, SAVINGS GROUPS AND LENDING SERVICES. WORKSHOPS FOR THE WOMEN ALSO ADDRESS HARMFUL SOCIAL AND HEALTH CONCERNS WITHIN THE COMMUNITY, SUCH AS HIV/AIDS AND CHILD MARRIAGE. THIS PROJECTS LAUNCHED IN MARCH 2019 AND THERE ARE ALREADY 3,315 WOMEN REGISTERED IN 79 SAVINGS GROUPS. MEMBERS REPORT SUBSTANTIALLY INCREASING THEIR FINANCIAL STATUS AND SENSE OF WORTH IN THEIR COMMUNITIES.IN INDIA, THE EXPERIENCE SHARING AND REVIEW MEETING BROUGHT TOGETHER MEMBERS OF COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT PROGRAMS THROUGHOUT INDIA'S TERRITORIES TO SHARE ANNUAL REPORTS, PROGRESS UPDATES AND CHALLENGES WITH THE COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT PROGRAMS. IN ADDITION, THE EXPERIENCE SHARING AND REVIEW MEETING LOOKED AT SOME OF THE WAYS CLIMATE CHANGE HAS IMPACTED LIVELIHOODS IN COMMUNITIES, DISCUSSED WAYS IN WHICH MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITIES COULD WORK TOWARDS COMBATING CLIMATE CHANGE, AND BUILD SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENTS.
