Court assistance, parent education, and prevention of child abuse.

SCAN's Public Education Program raises awareness of the public about child abuse and neglect issues, the power of prevention, and ways to get involved in supporting families and children. The program provides community training in child sexual abuse prevention and other parenting and child abuse related topics. The program also seeks to support positive parenting through messages disseminated via a comprehensive media plan; leadership of a region-wide coalition of prevention professionals (the Allies in Prevention Coalition); Operation Safe Babies, which provides cribs and safe sleep education; an interactive community technology plan, which utilizes SCAN's website at www.scanva.org and monthly email alerts; grassroots public education efforts; and training of other providers.

SCAN's Alexandria/Arlington Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Program recruits, trains, and supervises volunteers who advocate for abused or neglected children in Alexandria, VA and Arlington, VA juvenile courts and in the community as decisions are made about their future - with the goal of ensuring each child a safe, permanent home and opportunities for future well-being.During the year, Court Appointed Special Advocates donated 8,867 hours with an estimated value of $252,348.

SCAN's Parent Education Program provides parenting classes, educational parent support groups, and workshops in English and Spanish; and publishes a "Parent Connection Resource Guide" two times each year - all with the goal of building parenting skills, enhancing family functioning, and connecting families to community resources that improve children's lives.During the year, childcare volunteers and facilitators donated 232 hours with an estimated value of $6,603.
