Humanitarian aid for South Sudanese people

Cornerstone Children's Home is a home for children orphaned by the conflict in South Sudan, at-risk children in Uganda and the staff who serve as their parents. Originally from Nimule, South Sudan, the orphans and their caregivers were forced to flee to Uganda when the civil war resumed in 2016. CCH is located in Adjumani, Uganda, where the children receive food, shelter, clothes, education, Christian instruction, health care and hygiene and recreation. During 2020, CCH provided care for 64 children through staff and a social worker. 2020 also brought the challenge of COVID-19, leading Executive Director Samuel Juma to spend 6 months at CCH overseeing programs and managing the children's care. We are thankful that no child has had COVID-19.

Education. Within the compound in Adjumani, the Cornerstone Nursery and Primary School provides education through primary 7 to approximately 250 children, including the children at CCH, staff children, and other children from Adjumani district who pay tuition. School expenses for older children at CCH are paid to various secondary and post-secondary institutions. In 2020, the government of Uganda forced the closure of schools due to COVID-19. The manage- ment of Cornerstone Nursery and Primary School actively participated in government-provided remote learning for home schools starting May 11, 2020. This required much cooperation, hard work and discipline. Students began returning to classroom learning in 2021.

Agricultural Project: During 2020, thanks to generous gifts, Fulaa was able to purchase 25 acres of farmland not far from the compound. Much of the land has been cleared and a wide variety of crops have been planted including peanuts, cassava, mangoes, citrus, cabbage, onions, eggplant, maize, tomatoes, bananas, sugarcane, and several varieties of trees and spices. Also, the farm yielded 300 bags of charcoal in 2020. The farm hired laborers which provided job opportunities in targeted communities. The farm project was undertaken to increase food availability, improve the children's diet, reduce the risk of variable food prices in the market, and enhance long-term sustainability.
