Organizations Filed Purposes: THE BBB INSTITUTE'S MISSION IS TO FOSTER CONSUMER TRUST AND ETHICAL MARKETPLACE BEHAVIOR THROUGH RESEARCH ON CONSUMER/BUSINESS MARKETPLACE ISSUES, EDUCATION OF CONSUMERS AND THEIR BUSINESSES, DEVELOPMENT OF STANDARDS AND BEST PRACTICES AND PROMOTION OF ETHICAL CONDUCT.

TO FOSTER CONSUMER TRUST AND ETHICAL MARKETPLACE BEHAVIOR THROUGH EDUCATION PLUS RELATED PROGRAMS.

THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU AND BBB INSTITUTE FOR MARKETPLACE TRUST LAUNCHED THE BBB4GOOD INITIATIVE TO ADDRESS THE GROWING SEGMENT OF CONSUMERS SEEKING TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES THAT DELIVER OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO CUSTOMERS AND GIVE BACK IN THEIR COMMUNITIES. THROUGH OUR NETWORK OF BBBS LOCATED IN COMMUNITIES THROUGHOUT NORTH AMERICA, BBB4GOOD AIMS TO 1) EMPOWER CONSUMERS TO IDENTIFY SOCIAL IMPACT BUSINESSES IN THEIR COMMUNITIES BY CREATING AN ONLINE DIRECTORY OF SOCIAL IMPACT BUSINESSES, 2) SPOTLIGHT, CELEBRATE AND RECOGNIZE ORGANIZATIONS THAT INTEGRATE SOCIAL IMPACT INTO THEIR BUSINESS PLANS, AND 3) EXPAND OUR REACH THROUGH PARTNERSHIPS WITH LIKE-MINDED ORGANIZATION THAT ARE PROVIDING CRITICAL SUPPORT TO SOCIAL IMPACT ORGANIZATIONS. IN THE SPRING OF 2019, THE BBB4GOOD TASK FORCE MET FOR A FULL DAY TO DETERMINE THE NEXT STEPS AFTER HEARING FINDINGS FROM THE TWO PILOT PROJECTS. THE BBB4GOOD TEAM DELIVERED ONE-DAY TRAININGS FOR BBBS THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER OF 2019. PILOT BBBS COLLECTED SOCIO-ECONOMIC AND MINORITY DEMOGRAPHIC DATA LOCALLY AND PROVIDED FEEDBACK TO US REGARDING THE DATA AND THEIR EXPERIENCE. THIS INFORMATION WAS USED TO CREATE A TURN-KEY TOOLKIT TO ENABLE OTHER BBBS TO COLLECT THIS DATA AND EFFECTIVELY ENGAGE WITH THESE TYPES OF BUSINESSES. BBB INSTITUTE IS NOW WORKING TO CREATE A VALIDATION FRAMEWORK FOR THE PROGRAM.

BBB INSTITUTE PARTNERS WITH THE FINRA INVESTOR EDUCATION FOUNDATION TO OFFER FIGHTING FINANCIAL FRAUD, A FRAUD-PREVENTION PROGRAM THAT PROVIDES INDIVIDUALS WITH THE NECESSARY TOOLS AND RESOURCES TO MAKE INFORMED FINANCIAL AND INVESTING DECISIONS AND AVOID FRAUDULENT OR UNWISE FINANCIAL SCHEMES. BBB INSTITUTE TRAINS LOCAL BBB OFFICES TO DELIVER THE FIGHTING FINANCIAL FRAUD PROGRAM IN COMMUNITIES ACROSS THE COUNTRY. BBBS LEARN HOW TO CONDUCT THE PROGRAM AND ORGANIZE WORKSHOPS AND CAMPAIGNS IN THEIR SERVICES AREAS, AND SHARE HELPFUL INFORMATION AND RESOURCES ON HOW TO MAKE WISE INVESTMENT DECISIONS. THROUGH DYNAMIC IN-PERSON AND VIRTUAL TRAINING EVENTS, ONLINE RESOURCES, AND VIDEO DOCUMENTARIES, CURRENT AND FUTURE CONSUMERS LEARN: WHO FITS THE PROFILE OF A POTENTIAL FINANCIAL FRAUD TARGET, HOW TO IDENTIFY THE PERSUASION TACTICS FRAUDSTERS USE, HOW TO REDUCE RISKY BEHAVIORS BY ASKING QUESTIONS AND CHECKING INFORMATION, AND SIMPLE STEPS TO TAKE BEFORE ANY INVESTMENT DECISION. IN AUGUST 2019, WE HOSTED 19 BBB OUTREACH PROFESSIONALS FROM THROUGHOUT THE BBB SYSTEM TO LEARN ABOUT THE FIGHTING FINANCIAL FRAUD PROGRAM AND HOW THEY CAN IMPLEMENT THIS PROGRAM IN THEIR COMMUNITIES. ATTENDEES PRAISED THE NEW CRYPTOCURRENCY BASICS WORKSHOPS RELEASED IN PILOT FORMAT DURING THE TRAINING, SAYING THAT IT WAS "A VERY CLEAR AND DIGESTIBLE OVERVIEW OF A TOPIC THAT CAN BE SO, SO CONFUSING" TO MANY CONSUMERS AND BUSINESS OWNERS. ATTENDEES ALSO NOTED THE IMPORTANCE OF MAKING CONNECTIONS WITH OTHER BBBS, BBB INSTITUTE STAFF, AND FINRA CONTACTS. BBB INSTITUTE ALSO LAUNCHED THE EXPOSED TO SCAMS REPORT MENTIONED PREVIOUSLY, WHICH WAS FUNDED BY THE FINRA GRANT.

BBB SCAM TRACKER IS AN ONLINE TOOL THAT ENABLES CONSUMERS TO REPORT SCAM ACTIVITY AND PREVENT OTHERS FROM FALLING PREY TO SIMILAR CONS. THE EASY-TO-USE TOOL COLLECTS AND PRESENTS SCAM DATA IN A SEARCHABLE ONLINE "HEAT MAP," SHOWING USERS THE NUMBER AND TYPES OF SCAMS AND HOAXES REPORTED IN THEIR COMMUNITIES. BBB SCAM TRACKER PROVIDES A WINDOW ON THE SCAM LANDSCAPE, DISTRIBUTING DATA-DRIVEN CONSUMER ALERTS AND TIPS BASED ON CURRENT INFORMATION. DATA ARE ALSO SHARED WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES FOR INVESTIGATIVE PURPOSES. BBB INSTITUTE PUBLISHED THE THIRD BBB SCAM TRACKER ANNUAL REPORT IN 2019, RECEIVING A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF MEDIA ATTENTION, ENABLING US TO REACH MORE CONSUMERS AND BUSINESSES. IN AUGUST 2019, BBB INSTITUTE PUBLISHED MILITARY CONSUMERS & MARKETPLACE TRUST: AN ANALYSIS OF MARKETPLACE CHALLENGES FACING THE MILITARY COMMUNITY (2019). THE NEW REPORT EXAMINED THE TENS OF THOUSANDS OF BUSINESS COMPLAINTS AND SCAMS REPORTED TO THE BBB IN 2018 BY MILITARY CONSUMERS TO ANALYZE SERVICE MEMBERS, VETERANS, AND MILITARY FAMILIES' UNIQUE PAIN POINTS WHEN ENGAGING WITH BUSINESSES. IN THE FALL OF 2019, BBB INSTITUTE COLLABORATED WITH THE FINRA FOUNDATION AND THE STANFORD CENTER ON LONGEVITY TO PUBLISH EXPOSED TO SCAMS: WHAT SEPARATES VICTIMS FROM NON-VICTIMS? THE REPORT EXPLORES THE COGNITIVE, BEHAVIORAL, AND ATTITUDINAL DIFFERENCES BETWEEN VICTIMS AND NON-VICTIMS. BETTER UNDERSTANDING THE FRAUD VICTIMIZATION PROCESS WILL HELP BBB INSTITUTE AND OUR PARTNERS IMPROVE OUR EFFORTS TO STOP SCAMMERS.
