Counter Violent Extremism (CVE) Project in Tunisia:In 2019, CSID continued the implementation of a 2-year project, funded by the Foreign Ministry of Canada, to fight against violent extremism and radicalism (CVE) in Tunisia by training religious leaders and religious actors on how to promote a moderate, tolerant, and non-violent interpretations of Islam and Islamic texts. The 2-year program was called hand in hand against violence and extremism and consisted of training 400 Imams (religious leaders) in 5 different governorates (Bizerte, Tunis, Kairouan, Kasserine, Medenine) on three topics: 1) democracy, human rights, and citizenship; 2) conflict resolution methods and techniques; and 3) Communications and social media. The project was implemented in partnership with the ministry of Religious Affairs and with CSID-Tunisia, and has been very successful. Other program services:Publications, email and internet. Published and disseminated a monthly newsletter on the status of democracy throughout the Arab world, and published CSID E-mail Bulletin and disseminated it to approximately 45,000 people around the U.S. and the world, and 15,000 in Tunisia. Other program services include periodic lectures, seminars, conferences, and other public events on Islam and Democracy, as well as on the democratic transitions in Tunisia.

CSID 20th Annual Conference:CSID organized its 20th Annual Conference around the theme of: Democracy and Good Governance in Muslim-Majority Countries: Lessons from the Last 20 Years, on Thursday, September 12, 2019 at Copley Formal, at Georgetown University. It was hosted and co-sponsored by Georgetown Universitys Alwaleed Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, the University of Denvers Center for Middle East Studies, and the Center for Global Policy.Over 125 of the most distinguished policy makers and academicians were in attendance at this event. The main topics discussed during the Conference were 1) Democracy and Good Governance in Islamic Thought: Past and Present, 2) Whither Egypt? Eight Years After the Arab Spring, 3) Jamal Khashoggi, Human Rights, and the U.S.-Saudi Alliance, and 4) Tunisia and the Enduring Hope of Democracy in the Arab World.
