Organizations Filed Purposes:
The purpose of the China Folk House Retreat is to purchase, reconstruct, and maintain an imported Chinese farm house in the United States as a place for the social and educational development of youth and others.
The organization held a summer session for a construction crew of twelve students, including two exchange students from China, working under the leadership of Pam Leonard (CEO) and John Flower (director). We became a co-isolated pod, and continued building the camp buildings which have become showcases of alternative green building techniques. The young group of volunteers began work on what we believe is the largest hempcrete wall in America, a carbon-negative building material. After the summer session finished, work continued with a local homeschool group of approximately 10 students that came for 16 consecutive Fridays. These young middle schoolers enjoyed the skills and accomplishments they achieved. In addition, many other community volunteers assisted on other days and we counted a total of over 60 volunteers logged over 4,800 hours of work. At the same time, we continued to provide employment for our professional carpenters and tradespeople who began construction on our bathhouse which we hope to complete in 2021. This will be a key facility for serving visitors not only to the China Folk House, but our partner 501c3 organization, The Friends Wilderness Center. In addition, the CFHR site has many drop-in visits from local pleasure hikers, other local organizations, educators who work on projects related to China, neighboring retreat participants, and people interested in sustainable building. These drop-in visitors we estimate at over 200 people last year and they all learned the story of the Folk House on their visits with printed materials and personal tours.
