Organizations Filed Purposes:
TO CONDUCT RESEARCH AND PROMOTE PUBLIC AWARENESS ON MATTERS OF DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL POLICY.
EDUCATION & HUMAN RESOURCESCED IS INVOLVED IN THE THREE MAJOR PILLARS OF EDUCATION POLICY - EARLY CARE AND EDUCATION, K-12, AND POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION.1)CED RECEIVED A FIRST-TIME GRANT AWARD IN 2013 FROM THE LUMINA FOUNDATION FOR AN 18-MONTH RESEARCH PROJECT THAT IDENTIFIED PROMISING BUSINESS PRACTICES FOR EMPLOYEE POSTSECONDARY DEGREE ATTAINMENT AND CERTIFICATION. CED ASSESSED BOTH INCENTIVES AND IMPEDIMENTS, AND EXAMINED FACTORS THAT DETERMINE SUCCESS. 2)CED IS ENGAGED IN A TWO-YEAR INITIATIVE TO SUPPORT BOTH HIGH STANDARDS AND A HIGH-QUALITY EDUCATION SYSTEM THAT PREPARES ALL STUDENTS FOR COLLEGE AND THE WORKPLACE (THE COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS). AS PART OF THIS PROJECT WE HAVE FORMED A CED COLLEGE- AND CAREER-READY TASK FORCE OF 29 MEMBERS. 3)CED CONTINUES TO ENGAGE BUSINESS CHAMPIONS AROUND THE NEED TO SUPPORT HIGH QUALITY EARLY CARE AND EDUCATION IN THEIR STATES AND COMMUNITIES. CED HAS TARGETED NEW MEXICO, GEORGIA, LOUISIANA, AND MISSISSIPPI AS STATES THAT COULD BENEFIT FROM BUSINESS LEADERSHIP IN SUPPORT OF HIGH QUALITY EARLY EDUCATION.
DEMOCRATIC INSTITUTIONS:1)IN 2014, CED RELEASED EVERY OTHER ONE: MORE WOMEN ON CORPORATE BOARDS BOTH A NEW REPORT AND AN AMBITIOUS CALL TO ACTION FOCUSED ON BOARD DIVERSITY AND WOMEN'S ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT. CED COMMENCED A NATIONAL OUTREACH CAMPAIGN TO ENGAGE BUSINESS LEADERS ON GENDER DIVERSITY IN CORPORATE BOARDS, RAISING AWARENESS THROUGH LOCAL POLICY FORUMS AND PARTNERING WITH LIKE-MINDED ORGANIZATIONS AND PLACING OPINION PIECES IN NATIONAL MEDIA. 2)CED BELIEVES THAT THE SUCCESS OF AMERICAN BUSINESS IS DEPENDENT ON FAIR AND IMPARTIAL COURTS AND STRONG DEMOCRATIC INSTITUTIONS. CED IS CONCERNED THAT THE INCREASING ROLE OF MONEY IN JUDICIAL ELECTIONS, COULD CORRODE THE FUNCTIONING AND INTEGRITY OF OUR DEMOCRACY. CED BELIEVES THAT THE VOICES OF BUSINESS, AS ENGAGED CONCERNED STAKEHOLDERS, ARE ESSENTIAL TO STRENGTHENING ECONOMIC GROWTH, ENHANCING PUBLIC TRUST, AND IMPROVING DEMOCRATIC INSTITUTIONS. CED HAS LONG STATED THAT A VIBRANT AND STRONG ECONOMY RESULTS FROM BUSINESS COMPETITION IN THE MARKETPLACE, NOT IN THE POLITICAL ARENA. CED IS ENGAGED IN A MULTI-YEAR EFFORT TO COLLABORATE WITH STATE-BASED BUSINESS AND NON-IDEOLOGICAL GROUPS WITH THE GOAL OF EDUCATING BUSINESS LEADERS AROUND THE NEED TO SUPPORT STRONG DEMOCRATIC INSTITUTIONS.
ECONOMIC POLICY AND GROWTH:1)A NEW SUBCOMMITTEE WAS INITIATED TO COINCIDE WITH PREPARATIONS FOR CED'S 75TH ANNIVERSARY IN 2017. THIS SUBCOMMITTEE SEEKS TO RENEW CED'S FOUNDING PRINCIPLES THROUGH A MULTI-YEAR PROGRAM THAT WILL TEST THE VIABILITY OF "SUSTAINABLE CAPITALISM" - AN ENDURING ECONOMIC SYSTEM BASED ON PRIVATE PROPERTY; COMPETITIVE MARKETS; THE RULE OF LAW; SOCIAL AWARENESS; SOUND CORPORATE GOVERNANCE; EFFICIENT PUBLIC POLICY; BUSINESS STATESMANSHIP; AND STEADY SUPPORT FROM, AND CONSTRUCTIVE BALANCE AMONG, SOCIETY'S CONSTITUENTS.2)THE HEALTHCARE REFORM SUBCOMMITTEE EXPANDS ON PAST CED RESEARCH TO PROVIDE A DEEPER AND MORE DETAILED VISION OF THE FEASIBILITY OF A HEALTH INSURANCE SYSTEM WITH MARKET-BASED COMPETITION AMONG PRIVATE INSURANCE PLANS. THE RESEARCH WILL EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ON WHY AND HOW SUCH A SYSTEM WOULD PROVIDE QUALITY, AFFORDABLE CARE. IN SO DOING, IT WOULD DISPEL PRECONCEPTIONS THAT NOW APPARENTLY DISSUADE SOME PEOPLE FROM EVEN CONSIDERING SUCH AN ALTERNATIVE TO OUR CURRENT COSTLY, HIT-OR-MISS-QUALITY SYSTEM.THIS PROJECT OFFERS CED AN OPPORTUNITY TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ON ITS VISION OF HEALTH CARE - BOTH AFFIRMATIVELY STATING THE CASE AND DESCRIBING THE PLAN, AND ANSWERING TYPICAL CONCERNS AND OBJECTIONS REGARDING A GREATER ROLE FOR MARKET FORCES. IT IS HARD TO IMAGINE SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS ON HEALTHCARE COST AND QUALITY WITHOUT THIS KIND OF STRUCTURAL REFORM, AND THE EDUCATION PROCESS THAT WE CONTEMPLATE WOULD BE A NECESSARY FIRST STEP TOWARD THAT GOAL.
