GFTH serves the Washington DC-area homeless population by providing donated used clothing, blankets, toiletries, and related items to area homeless support organizations and by using monetary donations to purchase new clothing and blankets that the organization distributes to homeless support organizations that, in turn, distribute them to the Washington DC-area homeless population.
Gifts for the Homeless, Inc. (GFTH) collects donations of used clothing, blankets and other items, and monetary donations to purchase new clothing, blankets and other items. These new and used items are distributed to area homeless support organizations.
Used Clothing Drive: Beginning in October, area law firms, corporations, and other entities with ties to the Washington, DC legal community ask their employees to donate used clothing, blankets, toiletries, and related items and to make monetary contributions for the purchase of new clothing and blankets. Other individuals in the community who are not associated with these organizations or the legal community also provide donations for the purchase of new clothing and blankets. Each participating entity collects used clothing, toiletries, blankets, and related items during the first weekend of December. Volunteers sort these donated items and assist in delivering these items to homeless support organizations in the Washington, DC area. The entire process occurs during a three-day weekend. The expenses listed here include the value of goods that GFTH distributed during the used clothing drive. Members of the Board covered the costs of expenses necessary to execute the drive.
New clothing purchases: The organization purchases from wholesalers socks, underwear, hats, gloves, sweatshirts and sweatpants, jackets, blankets, and other items and donates these items to Washington DC-area homeless support organizations. GFTH makes these new clothing donations primarily during the late fall and winter, in order to allow homeless support organizations to provide warm clothing and blankets to the homeless population they serve. GFTH collects funds to purchase new clothing and blankets from wholesale suppliers throughout the year, during the Used Clothing Drive and a "Battle of the Law Firms Bands" concert each summer.
