AFTER MORE THAN 25 YEARS, WE REMAIN THE MOST COMPREHENSIVE NATIONAL RESOURCE COMMITTED TO ADVANCING VICTIMS' RIGHTS AND HELPING VICTIMS OF CRIME REBUILD THEIR LIVES.THE NATIONAL CENTER IS, AT ITS CORE, AN ADVOCACY ORGANIZATION COMMITTED TO -- AND WORKING ON BEHALF OF -- CRIME VICTIMS AND THEIR FAMILIES. RATHER THAN FOCUS THE ENTIRE ORGANIZATION'S WORK ON ONE TYPE OF CRIME OR VICTIM, THE NATIONAL CENTER ADDRESSES ALL TYPES OF CRIME.
THE NATIONAL CENTER FOR VICTIMS OF CRIME HAS A NUMBER OF RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO ASSIST VICTIMS OF CRIME DIRECTLY.THE VICTIMCONNECT RESOURCE CENTER AND THE DC VICTIM HOTLINE ASSIST VICTIMS WITH LEARNING ABOUT THEIR RIGHTS AND OPTIONS CONFIDENTIALLY AND COMPASSIONATELY THROUGH A TELEPHONE BASED HELPLINE, AN ONLINE CHAT, AND TEXT MESSAGING. THE CONNECT DIRECTORY PROVIDES A FAST AND EASY WAY FOR VICTIMS TO LOCATE SERVICE PROVIDERS SPECIALIZING IN SPECIFIC AREAS OF VICTIMIZATION IN A WIDE VARIETY OF JURISDICTIONS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY. THE VICTIMS RESOURCE GUIDE PROVIDES INFORMATION ON AVAILABLE VICTIMS SERVICES ACROSS THE COUNTRY, AND THE TRIBAL VICTIMS SERVICES PROJECT ENSURES THAT TRIBAL GOVERNMENTS AND LAW ENFORCEMENT ENTITIES CAN ACCESS RESOURCES FOR VICTIMS OF CRIME UNDER THEIR JURISDICTION. THE COMPASSION FUND COLLECTS AND ADMINISTERS THE DISTRIBUTION OF FUNDS RECEIVED FOR VICTIMS OF MASS CASUALTY CRIMES.
THE NATIONAL CENTER FOR VICTIMS OF CRIME VALUES EDUCATION AND TRAINING TO IMPROVE THE WAY CRIME VICTIMS ARE TREATED AND UNDERSTOOD. OUR TRAINING ACTIVITIES AND PROGRAMS SERVED AS A RESOURCE FOR THOSE WHO WORK WITH VICTIMS, REPRESENT VICTIMS' PERSPECTIVES, RAISE AWARENESS, DEVELOP SERVICES, AND FOSTER SYSTEMIC CHANGE.THE FINANCIAL CRIME RESOURCE CENTER HELPS ADVOCATES ASSIST VICTIMS OF FINANCIAL FRAUD. THE STATE VICTIM ASSISTANCE ACADEMIES RESOURCE CENTER IS A NATIONAL TRAINING AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE EFFORT TO FURTHER AND SUPPORT THE VITAL WORK OF SVAAS ACROSS THE COUNTRY, WHETHER JUST STARTING, ALREADY IN OPERATION, OR LOOKING TO EXPAND. THE COMPLEX HOMICIDE PROJECT TRAINS LAW ENFORCEMENT ENTITIES ACROSS THE COUNTRY ON BEST PRACTICES IN WORKING WITH SURVIVORS OF HOMICIDE VICTIMS.
THE ORGANIZATION'S NATIONAL CRIME VICTIM BAR ASSOCIATION PROVIDED TECHNICAL SUPPORT TO ATTORNEYS REPRESENTING CRIME VICTIMS IN CIVIL ACTIONS, REFERRED CRIME VICTIONS TO ATTORNEYS IN THEIR LOCAL AREAS, AND WORKED TO INCREASE GENERAL AWARENESS ABOUT THE AVAILABILITY OF CIVIL REMEDIES FOR VICTIMS OF CRIME. WE PROVIDED ACCESS TO A CIVIL JUSTICE DATABASE CONTAINING MORE THAN 11,000 ANNOTATED SUMMARIES OF CIVIL CASES BROUGHT BY CRIME VICTIMS. WE HOSTED AN ATTORNEY REFERRAL PHONE LINE CONFERENCE FOR ATTORNEYS WHO REPRESENT CRIME VICTIMS IN THE CIVIL JUSTICE SYSTEM. CONFERENCE PRESENTATIONS INCLUDED PREPARING CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE VICTIMS TO TESTIFY, CIVIL REMEDIES FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE VICTIMS OF ASSAULTS, AND THE ROLE OF THE CIVIL JUSTICE SYSTEM IN ADDRESSING THE GROWING PROBLEM OF ELDER ABUSE. WE HELD REGIONAL SEMINARS FOR CRIME VICTIM SERVICE PROFESSIONALS, INFORMING THEM OF THE RIGHT OF EVERY CRIME VICTIM TO FILE A CIVIL LAWSUIT SEEKING FINANCIAL COMPENSATION FROM THE PERPETRATOR OR FROM OTHER PARTIES WHOSE UNREASONABLE CONDUCT GAVE RISE TO CONDITIONS THAT ALLOWED THE CRIME TO OCCUR. WE PROVIDED A BASIC UNDERSTANDING OF THE CIVIL JUSTICE SYSTEM SO THAT CRIME VICTIMS MIGHT CONSIDER THIS IMPORTANT OPTION AND KNOW WHERE TO TURN FOR HELP.
