THE PROJECT 2049 INSTITUTE INTENDS TO FILL A GAP IN THE PUBLIC POLICY REALM BY OFFERING ALTERNATIVE VIEWS REGARDING THE FUTURE INTERNATIONAL SECURITY AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC ENVIRONMENT.
THE PROJECT 2049 INSTITUTE IS A NON-PROFIT, NON-PARTISAN ORGANIZATION THAT PROMOTES INTERNATIONAL SECURITY, INDIVIDUAL FREEDOM, AND DEMOCRATIC INSTITUTIONS IN THE ASIA-PACIFIC REGION THROUGH HIGH QUALITY, INDEPENDENT, FORWARD-LOOKING RESEARCH. ITS GOAL IS TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC AND MAKE A VALUABLE CONTRIBUTION TO THE PUBLIC POLICY DEBATE, AS WELL AS PROVIDE STUDIES WITH AN EYE TOWARD LONGER RANGE STRATEGIC FORECASTING, ALL FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE AMERICAN PUBLIC.
PROJECTS, TRIPS, AND EXCHANGES WITH LEADERS IN OTHER COUNTRIES, INCLUDING JAPAN, TAIWAN, AND CHINA, TO PROMOTE GREATER UNDERSTANDING OF THE SECURITY ENVIRONMENT IN THE REGION. THE PROJECT 2049 INSTITUTE HOSTS DISTINGUISHED VISITING FELLOWS FROM OVERSEAS (INCLUDING JAPAN AND TAIWAN), PROVIDING THEM WITH THE SPACE AND RESOURCES TO CONDUCT RESEARCH IN THE WASHINGTON, DC METRO AREA. THE INSTITUTE HOSTS CONFERENCES WHICH ARE FOCUSED ON IMPORTANT SECURITY TRENDS IN THE REGION TO FOSTER A GREATER UNDERSTANDING OF KEY ISSUES AMONG POLICYMAKERS, SCHOLARS, AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC.
FUTURE-ORIENTED RESEARCH: THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA'S STRATEGIC AND MILITARY DEVELOPMENTS INCLUDING ITS NUCLEAR WARHEAD PROGRAM, RECONNAISSANCE INFRASTRUCTURE, BALLISTIC MISSILE DEFENSE SYSTEM, MARITIME STRIKE CAPABILITY, CYBER AND POLITICAL WARFARE; TAIWAN'S ALTERNATIVE FUTURE SCENARIOS; US-JAPAN ALLIANCE RELATIONSHIP; US-TAIWAN SECURITY PARTNERSHIP; AND DEMOCRACY BUILDING IN BURMA. IN ADDITION TO THESE RESEARCH EFFORTS, THE PROJECT 2049 INSTITUTE HAS SEVERAL ONGOING PROGRAMS, INCLUDING AN EXCHANGE PROGRAM WITH THE SASAKAWA PEACE FOUNDATION BASED IN TOKYO AND THE TAIWANESE GOVERNMENT.
