THE RESEARCH!AMERICA ALLIANCE ADVOCATES FOR SCIENCE, DISCOVERY, AND INNOVATION TO ACHIEVE BETTER HEALTH FOR ALL. RESEARCH!AMERICA ADVOCATES FOR FEDERAL FUNDING FOR SCIENCE AND HEALTH RESEARCH THAT KEEPS PACE WITH SCIENTIFIC OPPORTUNITY. WE ADVOCATE FOR A LEGISLATIVE AND REGULATORY CLIMATE THAT STIMULATES GROWTH IN PRIVATE SECTOR RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT.

ELEVATING MEDICAL AND HEALTH RESEARCH AS A HIGHER NATIONAL PRIORITY - IN 2018, RESEARCH!AMERICA, ALONG WITH OUR MORE THAN 400 ALLIANCE MEMBER ORGANIZATIONS, WORKED DILIGENTLY TO ADVANCE FUNDING AND POLICY PRIORITIES AIMED AT SPEEDING MEDICAL PROGRESS, STRENGTHENING OUR NATION'S PUBLIC HEALTH SYSTEM, AND ASSURING OUR NATION SUSTAINS ITS STRATEGICALLY VITAL STANDING AS THE GLOBAL LEADER IN SCIENCE AND INNOVATION. OUR ALLIANCE PLAYED A PROMINENT ROLE IN ACHIEVING KEY FUNDING AND POLICY ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN 2018, INCLUDING A BIPARTISAN DEAL TO RAISE THE BUDGET CAPS IN FY 2018 AND FY 2019, A $3 BILLION AND $2 BILLION INCREASE FOR THE NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH (NIH) IN FY 2018 AND 2019 RESPECTIVELY. OUR EFFORTS ALSO PLAYED A ROLE IN PREVENTING A NUMBER OF HARMFUL PROPOSALS FROM ADVANCING. WE PARTICIPATED IN 219 CONGRESSIONAL MEETINGS AND HELD 70 MEETINGS WITH EXECUTIVE BRANCH OFFICIALS. RESEARCH!AMERICA PUBLISHED 61 NEW FACT SHEETS, INFOGRAPHICS, AND OTHER ADVOCACY AND PUBLIC EDUCATION MATERIALS. WE SENT OR SIGNED ONTO 61 LETTERS AND STATEMENTS DIRECTED TO MEMBERS OF CONGRESS OR THE ADMINISTRATION, INCLUDING LETTERS ADVOCATING FOR ROBUST FY 2018 AND FY 2019 FUNDING FOR HEALTH AND OTHER SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH, AND CALLING FOR THE REPEAL OF THE MEDICAL DEVICE EXCISE TAX.

PARTNERING WITH MEMBERS ON HIGH-IMPACT PROGRAMS - RESEARCH!AMERICA ORGANIZED 34 SPECIAL EVENTS HIGHLIGHTING HOW RESEARCH DRIVES INNOVATION, INCLUDING FOUR CAPITOL HILL BRIEFINGS SHOWCASING THE INTERPLAY OF PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SECTOR-FUELED R&D UNDERLYING MEDICAL AND PUBLIC HEALTH PROGRESS. THROUGH THE "ADVOCACY AND ACTION" PAGE ON OUR WEBSITE, WE PROVIDED A HOST OF RESOURCES FOR HANDS-ON ADVOCACY, INCLUDING EDITABLE EMAILS AND TWEETS, TALKING POINTS, AND PHONE SCRIPTS. WE ALSO HELD MEETINGS FOR ALLIANCE MEMBERS THAT FEATURED CONTENT EXPERTS ON THE APPROPRIATIONS PROCESS, VALUE-BASED PURCHASING, CLINICAL RESEARCH, AND OTHER TIMELY ISSUES; AND HOSTED MEETINGS AND CALLS THAT GAVE OUR MEMBERS AN OPPORTUNITY TO HEAR FROM KEY FEDERAL OFFICIALS AND APPROPRIATIONS AND AUTHORIZING COMMITTEE STAFF.

ANNUAL SIGNATURE PROGRAM EVENTS - RESEARCH!AMERICA'S 2018 NATIONAL HEALTH RESEARCH FORUM EXPLORED A RANGE OF TOPICS THAT ARE FRONT AND CENTER AS OUR NATION LEVERAGES RESEARCH TO OVERCOME DEADLY AND DEBILITATING HEALTH THREATS. FROM DISCUSSING NEW AND NEWLY EMERGING STRATEGIES FOR SPEEDING THE PATH TO BETTER HEALTH, TO CONSIDERING THE CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES THAT BEAR ON PROGRESS AGAINST TREATMENT-ELUSIVE HEALTH THREATS, TO CHECKING IN ON THE HUGELY AMBITIOUS AND CRITICALLY IMPORTANT BRAIN INITIATIVE, THIS YEAR'S FORUM CAPTURED THE SENSE OF URGENCY, POSSIBILITY AND UNWAVERING DETERMINATION THAT IS EMPOWERING SCIENCE TO CREATE A HEALTHIER FUTURE FOR AMERICANS AND POPULATIONS ACROSS THE GLOBE.
