Organizations Filed Purposes:
The White Bird Appaloosa Horse Rescue rescues, rehabilitates, retrains and rehomes at-risk Appaloosas and other horses. Horses that cannot be adopted are provided permanent sanctuary so that they may live out the remainder of their lives in safety and dignity. The rescue provides community support to those families unable to continue caring for their horses, assists local Animal Control officers and conducts outreach and educational sessions.
Equine Rehabilitation: Feed and Hay, plus supplements for approximately 24 horses. Feed and hay are the largest cost item. Despite serving fewer horses during 2019, the cost of hay and feed used continued to rise, and more hay was purchased from suppliers.
Equine Rehabilitation: Includes veterinary care, farrier work, medical supplementation and health care items. Rescues arrive in a variety of conditions - starved, unsound, and with a range of medical problems. In 2019 the rescue continued to care for the remainder of the unhandled horses, long term care for sanctuary horses, as well as taking in new horses from a variety of sources. The decrease in funding for this service compared to 2018 reflects fewer horses, even with increases in medication and veterinary costs. The total includes rehabilitative care and end of life euthanasia when necessary.
Equine Housing: While the rescue's facilities and foster homes are donated space, horses are large, strong animals that are rough on infrastructure such as shelters and fences. The repair and upkeep of facilities and equipment to keep them usable and safe is an ongoing expense. The cost of this service reflects continuing maintenance, repair and additions to old facilities, plus the completion of new facilities purchased in 2018.
