HomeAid Northern Virginia builds new lives for families and individuals experiencing homelessness through housing and community outreach. HomeAid's goal is to be the go-to building resource for Northern Virginia service providers. Through our Shelter Program, HomeAid builds and renovates non-profit facilities at a 30-100% savings thanks to the generosity of our Builder Captains and Trade Partners. This savings enables our Shelter Partners to improve their facilities while focusing their limited resources on critical programming that helps their clients become self-sufficient.
We build new lives for families and individuals experiencing homelessness through housing and community outreach.
Homeaid Northern Virginia leverages the relationships and resources of the homebuilding industry to build and renovate housing facilities owned and operated by non-profit service providers. HVNA connects non-profit service providers with homebuilders who generously offer their experience, time and resources to create beautifully constructed or renovated spaces. In 2019, HANV coordinated more than $400,000 in in-kind donations from regional home building professionals and trade partners to renovate three housing facilities for these projects. HANV coordinated the work of seven homebuilders and 130 trade partners. The projects that HANV undertakes benefit the non-profit partners that own and operate the shelters and provides dignified spaces for individuals and families experiencing homelessness to heal and to thrive. The projects completed in 2019 served a range of people including those with mental illnesses, individuals with disabilities and children. The renovations varied project to project and included adding storage space and shelving, installing new flooring, improving accessibility into the facilities, updating new cabinets, countertops and appliances in kitchens, and improving bathrooms. In all cases, the renovations improved the efficiency and increased the safety of the spaces. By donating their services and materials, HANV's home builder partners allow the non-profits to stretch their funds and focus on programs and trainings rather than on building projects.
The Shelter Services Program fills in the gaps by providing donations of household goods and food items for projects recently completed, as well as planning outreach and enrichment events for individuals and families experiencing homelessness and providing training for Shelter staff through the Annual Housing Forum. These programs help families and individuals experiencing homelessness gain stability by providing a roof over their heads and by offering the tools necessary to rebuild their lives on a secure foundation of self-confidence and hope.
The Turnover program was initiated in 2018, designed to help organization prepare units for new tenants by painting and replacing flooring. We connect our builders with non-profits with the rapid rehousing model being at the forefront. Many of the non-profits own the condos or townhouses that house a family for a period of time and need to be quickly turned over once vacant. The program focuses on replacing carpet with luxury vinyl planking (LVP), which has a higher upfront cost but is far more durable and easier to keep clean--meaning long-term savings for HomeAid partners and dignified, healthy spaces for the clients they serve.
