BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF CENTRAL VIRGINIA, THE AREA'S LEADING PROVIDER OF YOUTH DEVELOPMENT SERVICES, ENABLES ALL YOUNG PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO NEED US MOST, TO REALIZE THEIR FULL POTENTIAL AS PRODUCTIVE, RESPONSIBLE, AND CARING CITIZENS. PROGRAMS PROMOTE ACADEMIC SUCCESS, HEALTHY LIFESTYLES, AND GOOD CHARACTER AND CITIZENSHIP.BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF CENTRAL VIRGINIA HAS AN ORGANIZATION WIDE COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION TO STRENGTHEN INTERNAL POLICIES AND PROMOTE EQUITY IN THE COMMUNITY. INTENT ON CREATING AN ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH ALL STAFF CAN THRIVE, BGCCVA INVITES CLUB STAFF TO PARTICIPATE IN A WEEKLY OR MONTHLY ANTI-RACISM DIALOGUE WITH THE CEO AND INVITED, EXPERT GUEST SPEAKERS. THE VIRGINIA/WASHINGTON, D.C. AREA COUNCIL OF BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF AMERICA NAMED BGCCVA'S BOARD THE 2020 BOARD TEAM OF THE YEAR IN RECOGNITION OF ITS ANTI-RACISM AND SOCIAL JUSTICE WORK.
WITH A BELIEF THAT ALL CHILDREN DESERVE OPPORTUNITIES FOR AN EDUCATION AND TO SUCCEED, BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF CENTRAL VIRGINIA OFFERS 40 TO 60 PROGRAMS TO CHILDREN AGES 6 TO 18 THAT PROMOTE ACADEMIC SUCCESS, HEALTHY LIFESTYLES, AND GOOD CHARACTER AND CITIZENSHIP. ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES PREPARE KIDS TO BE MORE ENGAGED IN THE CLASSROOM; HEALTHY LIFESTYLES PROGRAMS PROMOTE OVERALL WELLNESS THROUGH PHYSICAL ACTIVITY, HEALTHY EATING, AND MINDFULNESS; AND LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES ALLOW MEMBERS TO ORGANIZE CLUB AND COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS. CLUB PROGRAMS INCLUDE HIGH-YIELD ACTIVITIES IN FIVE CORE AREAS: THE ARTS; CHARACTER AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT; HEALTH AND LIFE SKILLS; EDUCATION, TECHNOLOGY AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT; AND SPORTS, FITNESS AND RECREATION. HIGH QUALITY PROGRAMS, COMBINED WITH AFFORDABILITY AND ACCESSIBILITY, ARE THE CLUB'S MOST EFFECTIVE STRATEGIES IN REACHING UNDERSERVED POPULATIONS THAT NEED THE CLUB MOST. THE CLUB IS OPEN DURING CRITICAL OUT-OF-SCHOOL-TIMES, INCLUDING EVERY DAY AFTER SCHOOL, ALL DAY DURING THE SUMMER, MOST SCHOOL BREAKS, AND SELECTED EVENINGS AND WEEKENDS. TO PROMOTE ACCESS TO KIDS WHO NEED US MOST, CLUBS ARE LOCATED IN AREAS WHERE POVERTY RATES ARE HIGH. CLUB MEMBERSHIP FEES TO FAMILIES ARE ONLY $15 TO $150 ANNUALLY AND REPRESENT ONLY 2% OF THE ORGANIZATION'S REVENUE.IN FY20, AT LEAST 68% OF THE CLUB'S REGISTERED MEMBERS QUALIFIED FOR FREE OR REDUCED-PRICE LUNCH, 50% LIVED IN SINGLE-PARENT HOUSEHOLDS, AND 65% REPRESENTED MINORITY ETHNICITIES. ACROSS THE ORGANIZATION'S SIX CLUBS, MEMBERS COMPLETED A TOTAL OF 1,626 ACADEMIC SUCCESS PROGRAMS, 1,785 HEALTHY LIFESTYLES PROGRAMS, AND 384 GOOD CHARACTER AND CITIZENSHIP PROGRAMS. ENSURING THAT ATTENDEES HAVE ACCESS TO HEALTHY FOODS, THE CLUB PROVIDED 63,600 NUTRITIOUS SNACKS AND 55,000 WELL-BALANCED MEALS. FROM MARCH THROUGH JULY OF 2020 IN RESPONSE TO COVID-19, THE CLUB TRANSITIONED TO VIRTUAL PROGRAMS, STAYING CONNECTED TO CHILDREN AND FAMILIES THROUGH LIVE AND PRERECORDED SESSIONS AND HOME DELIVERIES OF PROGRAM SUPPLIES. IN ADDITION TO PRODUCING MEASURABLE RESULTS, CLUB PROGRAMS PROMOTE THE DEVELOPMENT OF BOYS AND GIRLS BY INSTILLING A SENSE OF COMPETENCE, USEFULNESS, BELONGING, AND INFLUENCE. THE CLUB IS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE ALL CHILDREN, REGARDLESS OF CIRCUMSTANCES, OPPORTUNITIES FOR A BRIGHT FUTURE.
