Light House Studio equips young people with the skills and confidence to tell their stories and build community through collaborative filmmaking. We seek to foster a community where Charlottesville's young people flourish as students,
Our filmmaking programs focus on storytelling, personal expression and fostering media literacy. Mirroring the explosion of youth media nationally, our workshops include Documentary, Animation, Narrative, Experimental Film, Music Video and Visual Effects. We conduct on site "Keep It Reel" filmmaking workshops located at Charlottesville High School, Albemarle High School, Jack Jouett Middle School, Southwood Boys & Girls Club and Greenstone on 5th, to name a few. In FY'18-'19 we taught 121 workshops to 1,763 students from 80 schools; worked with 31 different local artists to teach in 214 guest teaching slots; partnered with 68 local nonprofits and schools; showed student work to approximately 42,268 live audience members, with 782,719 cumulative online views of student work to date; had student films accepted to 31 film festivals, winning major awards including Best Student Documentary at the Indie & Foreign Film Festival, Best Animated Short at Garden State and My Hero Film Festivals and Best Directing at the Progeny Film Festival; and provided 1,427 scholarships, allowing 81 percent of students to attend at free or reduced cost. In addition, 5,467 people visited the Vinegar Hill Theatre to see over 250 independent documentary, narrative, and animated films, many created by our student filmmakers
