Organizations Filed Purposes: TO GATHER LOCAL ARTISTS AND ARTISTIC CATALYSTS SEEKING CRITICAL AND HOLISTIC ENGAGEMENT WITH THE CITY OF CHARLOTTESVILLE AND CENTRAL VIRGINIA REGARDING QUESTIONS OF ART, HUMANITY, AND FAITH. THE ORGANIZATION SEEKS THESE OBJECTIVES PRIMARILY THROUGH FACILITATING EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES AND GROUP DISCUSSIONS FOR ARTISTS, WRITERS, MUSICIANS, AND ALL THOSE INTERESTED IN CREATIVE ENDEAVORS, SERVING AS A NETWORK FOR ARTISTS, COMMUNITY MEMBERS, AND CHURCHES, AND MAINTAINING, CURATING, AND SUPPORTING SPACES WHERE ARTISTS CAN SHOW, PERFORM, AND CREATE WORK.

EDUCATION: THE FIRST OBJECTIVE OF THE ORGANIZATION IS TO CURATE A RANGE OF EDUCATIONAL FORUMS FOR ARTISTS AS WELL AS ARTS ENTHUSIASTS AND ADVOCATES. EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING INCLUDES DISCUSSION GROUPS, ARTIST TALKS, CONFERENCES, LECTURES, WORKSHOPS, AND SALONS WITH THE GOAL OF OFFERING NEW AUDIENCES AN INCREASED ACCESS TO THE ARTS AND VARIOUS KINDS OF CREATIVE PRACTICE.FREE, MONTHLY, PUBLIC ARTIST TALKS WERE HELD AT THE MAJORITY OF PUBLIC ART OPENINGS AT WELCOME GALLERY. NEW CITY ARTS HOSTED A MONTHLY EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN AGES 0-5. AT EACH NEW CITY ARTS AND CRAFTS EVENT, CHILDREN MADE A CRAFT INSPIRED BY THE EXHIBIT AND ENJOYED A READING TIME. TEN OF THESE EVENTS WERE HELD IN FY19 AND WERE FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.IN MARCH 2019, NEW CITY ARTS PARTNERED WITH VIRGINIA HUMANITIES AND MANY COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS TO PARTICIPATE IN A COLLABORATIVE PUBLIC ART PROJECT WITH LETTERPRESS ARTIST, AMOS PAUL KENNEDY, INCLUDING HOSTING A FREE LETTERPRESS WORKSHOP AT WELCOME GALLERY WITH THE ARTISTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS.IN PARTNERSHIP WITH LOCAL ARTS ORGANIZATIONS, NEW CITY ARTS PARTICIPATED IN THE 2ND ANNUAL HOLIDAY ART CRAWL IN DECEMBER 2018 BY HOSTING A GIFT-MAKING EVENT FOR 60 COMMUNITY MEMBERS AT WELCOME GALLERY.IN FY19, NEW CITY ARTS LED AN INTERNSHIP PROGRAM TO CREATE A SUPPORTIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT FOR 3 COLLEGE STUDENTS INTERESTED IN ARTS ADMINISTRATION.IN MARCH 2019, NEW CITY ARTS HOSTED A FREE, 40-PERSON WORKSHOP FOR ARTISTS LED BY ARTISTS TO SHARE RESOURCES AND INSTRUCTION ON HOW TO PRESENT ARTWORK IN APPLICATIONS AND PROPOSALS FOR RESIDENCIES, EXHIBITIONS, AND FELLOWSHIPS.IN PARTNERSHIP WITH COMMUNITY ARTS ORGANIZATIONS AND SPONSORS, NEW CITY ARTS HELPED HOST FREE, MONTHLY CREATIVEMORNINGS TALKS WELCOMING APPROXIMATELY 75 ATTENDEES TO EACH EVENT, WHICH FEATURED A TALK BY A CREATIVE PROFESSIONAL, BREAKFAST, AND COFFEE. 11 OF THESE EVENTS WERE HELD IN FY19 FOR OVER 650 ATTENDEES.NEW CITY ARTS WELCOMED STUDENTS CONGREGATION BETH ISRAEL'S KINDERGARTEN CLASS TO ENGAGE WITH EXHIBITIONS AT WELCOME GALLERY AND CREATE ARTWORK CONNECTED TO THE EXHIBITION.

COMMUNITY: THE SECOND OBJECTIVE OF THE ORGANIZATION IS TO SERVE AS A SUPPORTIVE NETWORK FOR ARTISTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS BY BUILDING BRIDGES AMONG DIFFERENT AUDIENCES INCLUDING UNIVERSITY PROFESSORS AND STUDENTS, SERVICE PROVIDERS AND NON-PROFITS, CHURCHES, BUSINESSES, POTENTIAL PATRONS, AND OTHER LOCAL ARTS ORGANIZATIONS.IN FALL 2018, THE ORGANIZATION FACILITATED THE FIFTH ANNUAL NEW CITY ARTIST EXCHANGE, AN ANNUAL, ARTIST-LED PROGRAM THAT BRINGS TOGETHER LOCAL ARTISTS TO CREATE AND EXCHANGE A UNIQUE SET OF ARTWORKS WITH ONE ANOTHER. 10 LOCAL ARTISTS PARTICIPATED IN THE EXCHANGE. THE NEW CITY ARTIST EXCHANGE BUILDS COMMUNITY BY INCREASING AWARENESS OF CHARLOTTESVILLE ART AMONG THE LOCAL ARTIST COMMUNITY AND FACILITATING A NETWORK OF ARTIST PEERS. PARTICIPANTS INCLUDED CHARLOTTESVILLE AREA PAINTERS, PRINTMAKERS, AND SCULPTORS.JULY 2018-JUNE 2019, THE ORGANIZATION AND THE HAVEN CONTINUED THEIR CROSS-SECTOR, LONG-TERM COLLABORATION THROUGH HOUSING2HOME. THROUGH HOUSING2HOME, THE HAVEN AND NEW CITY ARTS INITIATIVE FACILITATE HOMEMAKING SESSIONS WITH FORMERLY-HOMELESS, NEWLY-HOUSED CLIENTS TO CREATE A MORE POSITIVE HOME ENVIRONMENT THAT REFLECTS EACH CLIENT'S NEEDS. THE ORGANIZATION'S CREATIVE COORDINATOR WORKS WITH HOUSING2HOME CLIENTS TO CREATE PERSONALIZED, COMFORTABLE AND HAPPY SPACES AND, CONSEQUENTLY, MORE SUSTAINABLE HOUSING SITUATIONS. IN FY18, NEW CITY ARTS TRANSFORMED 25 HOUSEHOLDS, FURTHER INTEGRATING ARTS AND CULTURE INTO THE FIELD OF COMMUNITY PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT. HOUSING2HOME PROMOTES STABILITY AMONG FORMERLY-HOMELESS CLIENTS BY COMBINING STATE-FUNDED RENTAL SUBSIDIES WITH CREATIVE INTERVENTIONS. IN ADDITION TO HOUSING2HOME, NEW CITY ARTS PARTNERED WITH THE HAVEN ON ITS 9TH ANNUAL ART AUCTION IN JANUARY 2019 TO BENEFIT THIS PROGRAM WITH THE HAVEN. THE AUCTION FEATURED A LIVE AND SILENT AUCTION INCLUDING WORK BY OVER 50 ARTISTS.IN FY19, NEW CITY ARTS HOSTED MONTHLY FIRST FRIDAY RECEPTIONS AT WELCOME GALLERY FOR THE COMMUNITY THAT WERE FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. NEW CITY ARTS ALSO HOSTED A SPRING 2019 OPEN HOUSE TO MEET NEW ARTISTS INTERESTED IN EXHIBITING AT WELCOME GALLERY.OVER THE COURSE OF FY19, NEW CITY ARTS HOSTED HANDS-ON, ART-MAKING WORKSHOPS AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT EVENTS INCLUDING A ZINE-MAKING WORKSHOP, A COMMUNITY SINGING EVENT, AND TWO PERFORMANCES FEATURING 4 DIFFERENT LOCAL ARTISTS, ENGAGING APPROXIMATELY 75 COMMUNITY MEMBERS.THROUGHOUT FY19, NEW CITY ARTS STAFF REGULARLY MET WITH LOCAL ARTISTS TO CONNECT THEM TO CREATIVE COMMUNITY.IN FY19, NEW CITY ARTS LAUNCHED A CREATIVE COMMUNITY FUND TO SUPPORT A THOUGHTFUL APPROACH TO ARTIST-LED PROGRAMMING ALONGSIDE PARTNERS WHO ADDRESS RACISM AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC DISPARITY, RESPOND TO GLOBAL REFUGEE CRISES AND IMMIGRATION ISSUES, AND REDUCE HUNGER AND HOMELESSNESS. THROUGH THIS FUND, NEW CITY ARTS AND ORGANIZATIONS LIKE COMPUTERS4KIDS, THE HAVEN, ABUNDANT LIFE MINISTRIES, AND THE JUVENILE DETENTION CENTER WORKED TOGETHER TO SUPPORT WAYS ARTISTS CAN MEANINGFULLY WORK TOWARDS EQUITY THROUGH CREATIVE, COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT.

VOCATION: THE THIRD OBJECTIVE OF THE ORGANIZATION IS TO PROVIDE PHYSICAL, FINANCIAL, INSTITUTIONAL, AND RELATIONAL RESOURCES TO HELP ARTISTS LEARN, WORK, AND MAKE A LIVING. VOCATION SERVICES PROVIDE GALLERY, STUDIO, AND EVENT SPACE FOR ARTISTS, PARTNERING WITH A VARIETY OF LOCAL VENUES TO CONNECT ARTISTS WITH PERFORMANCE AND EXHIBIT OPPORTUNITIES ACCORDING TO THEIR SPECIFIC NEEDS.FROM JULY 2018-JUNE 2019, NEW CITY PRESENTED 11 EXHIBITS FEATURING 23 CHARLOTTESVILLE AREA ARTISTS. 4,371 ATTENDEES VISITED WELCOME GALLERY, AND ARTISTS SOLD APPROXIMATELY $12,564 OF WORK. AT WELCOME GALLERY, NEW CITY ACCEPTS A 25% COMMISSION, WHICH IS 5-10% LOWER THAN THE NON-PROFIT GALLERY STANDARD (30-35%), IN ORDER TO PROVIDE LOCAL ARTISTS WITH FINANCIAL SUPPORT. BY PARTICIPATING IN FIRST FRIDAYS, WELCOME GALLERY SUPPORTS OTHER ART SPACES THROUGH ITS CLOSE PROXIMITY TO OTHER DOWNTOWN GALLERIES LIKE SECOND STREET GALLERY. WELCOME GALLERY IS CAT-ACCESSIBLE, OPEN FROM NOON-4PM DURING THE WEEK, AND EXHIBITS ARE FREE OF CHARGE.FROM SEPTEMBER 2018-JUNE 2019, THE ORGANIZATION PROVIDED FREE, DOWNTOWN STUDIO SPACE FOR TWO RESIDENT ARTISTS, KARINA A. MONROY AND RAYNE MACPHEE, IN THE NEW CITY ARTS STUDIO SPACE, ADJACENT TO WELCOME GALLERY. FOR APPROXIMATELY HALF OF THE YEAR, EACH RESIDENT ARTIST RECEIVED FULL ACCESS TO NEW CITY ARTS FACILITIES, AND EACH ARTIST MAINTAINED A STUDIO PRACTICE OUT OF THEIR SPACE. RESIDENT ARTISTS ACHIEVED PROFESSIONAL GOALS, HOSTED OPEN STUDIOS EVERY MONTH DURING FIRST FRIDAY, AND WORKED TOWARDS SOLO EXHIBITIONS AT WELCOME GALLERY.IN NOVEMBER 2018 AND JUNE 2019, THE ORGANIZATION PARTNERED WITH COMMUNITY BUSINESSES TO HOST ITS 11TH AND 12TH EDITION OF CHARLOTTESVILLE SOUP, A PUBLIC DINNER SERIES TO SUPPORT CREATIVE PROJECTS AND ARTISTS IN CHARLOTTESVILLE. HELD AT CHRIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH IN THE FALL AND TRINITY EPISCOPAL CHURCH IN THE SPRING, APPROXIMATELY 230 ATTENDEES RECEIVED SOUP, SALAD, BREAD, DESSERT, AND A VOTE. DURING EACH MEAL, FOUR PROJECTS WERE PRESENTED BY LOCAL ARTISTS WHO MADE SHORT PRESENTATIONS ABOUT THEIR NEED FOR FUNDING. ATTENDEES PARTICIPATED IN A THOUGHTFUL DIALOGUE WITH THE PRESENTERS AND WITH ONE ANOTHER ABOUT THE PROPOSED PROJECTS OVER A DELICIOUS MEAL MADE FROM LOCAL INGREDIENTS, FOLLOWED BY A BALLOT VOTE, RESULTING IN A CROWD-FUNDED AWARD FOR THE WINNER WITH THE MOST VOTES. THE ORGANIZATION AWARDED A TOTAL OF $6,889 TO TWO LOCAL ARTISTS, SAHARA CLEMONS AND LISA WOOLFORK, LEADING CREATIVE PROJECTS IN FY19 THROUGH SOUP.
