THE MISSION OF THE HISTORIC NONPROFIT PARAMOUNT THEATER IS TO EDUCATE, ENCHANT, ENRICH, AND ENLIGHTEN THROUGH THE POWER OF THE ARTS BY PROVIDING HIGH-QUALITY PROGRAMMING AND ACCESSIBILITY FOR THE ARTISTIC AND CHARITABLE BENEFIT OF OUR ENTIRE COMMUNITY WHILE DRIVING ECONOMIC VITALITY FOR CHARLOTTESVILLE, ALBEMARLE, AND THE CENTRAL VIRGINIA REGION.
THEATER/PRODUCTION: THE PARAMOUNT THEATER OF CHARLOTTESVILLE, VIRGINIA IS A NONPROFIT PERFORMING ARTS CENTER DEDICATED TO PRESENTING A WIDE RANGE OF EDUCATION, ARTS, CIVIC AND ENTERTAINMENT EVENTS FOR DIVERSE COMMUNITY AUDIENCES IN THE RESTORED HISTORIC PARAMOUNT THEATER. SINCE IT RE-OPENED IN 2004, THE PARAMOUNT HAS WELCOMED MORE THAN 1.2 MILLION VISITORS TO THOUSANDS OF EVENTS INCLUDING LIVE PERFORMANCES, MOVIES, HIGH-DEFINITION SCREENINGS AND BROADCASTS, GUIDED HISTORIC TOURS, MEETINGS, AND FREE COMMUNITY EVENTS. JUST OVER 200 EVENTS WERE HELD BEFORE THE THEATER HAD TO TEMPORARILY CLOSE ITS DOORS ON MARCH 11, 2020 IN RESPONSE TO THE COVID-19 PUBLIC HEALTH CRISIS, SO THIS FINANCIAL REPORT REFLECTS ONLY ABOUT 8 MONTHS OF "NORMAL" OPERATIONS. THE THEATER REOPENED ON JULY 15, 2020 WITH LIMITED OPERATIONS AND GREATLY REDUCED CAPACITY NUMBERS FOR ALL EVENTS IN ACCORDANCE WITH CDC, STATE, AND LOCAL GUIDELINES. AS "CHARLOTTESVILLE'S LIVING ROOM," THE THEATER IS COMMITTED TO PROVIDING A SAFE AND HEALTHY ENTERTAINMENT VENUE FOR ALL OF GUESTS, STAFF, AND VOLUNTEERS AS IT CONTINUES TO SERVE AS A BEACON OF HOPE FOR THE COMMUNITY IN THE COVID-19 PUBLIC HEALTH AND ECONOMIC CRISIS.
ARTS EDUCATION: THE PARAMOUNT'S 2019-2020 ARTS EDUCATION PROGRAM PRESENTED 18 LIVE EDUCATIONAL PERFORMANCES DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR TO 13,414 STUDENTS AND EDUCATORS FROM LOCAL AREA PUBLIC, PRIVATE, AND HOME SCHOOL GROUPS. ALL STUDENTS WHO ATTENDED RECEIVED AT LEAST A PARTIAL DISCOUNT, WITH 3,443 STUDENTS RECEIVING FREE ADMISSION BASED ON THEIR ELIGIBILITY FOR THE FEDERAL FREE AND REDUCED PUBLIC SCHOOL MEALS PROGRAM. DUE TO THE LIMITATIONS OF COVID-19, THESE ATTENDANCE TOTALS ARE ABOUT 25% LESS THAN WHAT COULD BE EXPECTED FOR A FULL YEAR OF PROGRAM OPPORTUNITIES.
COMMUNITY ACCESS: THE MARY P. REESE COMMUNITY ACCESS FUND WAS ESTABLISHED TO ENSURE THAT ALL MEMBERS OF OUR COMMUNITY HAVE ACCESS TO THE ARTS THIS FUND ALLOWS US TO PROVIDE OUTREACH AND SCHOLARSHIPS TO STUDENTS AND MEMBERS OF OUR COMMUNITY, OFFER DISCOUNTED RATES FOR SPACE RENTALS TO NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS, AND HOST FREE EVENTS FOR THE PUBLIC. THROUGHOUT THE 2019-2020 YEAR, THE PARAMOUNT WELCOMED 1,084 COMMUNITY MEMBERS FROM 57 NON-PROFITS WITH COMPLIMENTARY TICKETS TO 62 EVENTS APPROXIMATELY 40 LOCAL NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS HOSTED A WIDE RANGE OF PERFORMING ARTS, EDUCATIONAL, CIVIC AND FUNDRAISING EVENTS AT THE THEATER AT A DISCOUNTED RENTAL RATE THAT WERE SUPPORTED BY THOUSANDS OF EVENT ATTENDEES. DUE TO COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS BEGINNING IN MARCH 2020, THESE ATTENDANCE TOTALS ARE SIGNIFICANTLY LESS THAN WHAT COULD BE EXPECTED FOR A FULL YEAR OF EVENTS. THE MARY P. REESE COMMUNITY ACCESS PROGRAM ALSO HELPS SUPPORT THE PARAMOUNT IN OPENING ITS DOORS FOR SELECT EVENTS AT NO CHARGE TO THE PUBLIC. IN 2019 - 2020, THE PARAMOUNT HOSTED 25 FREE COMMUNITY EVENTS, WHICH INCLUDED FREE HISTORICAL TOURS AND ACC MEN'S BASKETBALL GAMES OF WHICH MORE THAN 1,100 PARTICIPANTS ENJOYED FREE OF CHARGE SUCH FREE COMMUNITY EVENTS THAT GIVE BACK TO THE PUBLIC AND CONNECT OUR COMMUNITY SERVE AS AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE THEATER'S MISSION. IN ADDITION TO ITS OWN EVENTS AND THOSE OF ITS RENTERS, THE PARAMOUNT IS AN ECONOMIC DRIVER, BRINGING VITAL HOTEL, DINING AND RETAIL TRAFFIC TO CHARLOTTESVILLE'S DOWNTOWN PEDESTRIAN MALL. IN A RECENT 2017 AMERICANS FOR THE ARTS STUDY, IT WAS CALCULATED THAT PATRONS OF THE PARAMOUNT, ON AVERAGE, SPEND AN ADDITIONAL 30 ABOVE THE COST OF EACH TICKET ON FOOD, TRAVEL, LODGING, ETC. WITH APPROXIMATELY 100,000+ PATRONS ANNUALLY, THIS TRANSLATES TO A LOCAL IMPACT OF 3+ MILLION IN LOCAL SPENDING. THE ESTIMATED TOTAL SPENDING BY CULTURAL AUDIENCES IN CHARLOTTESVILLE IS 61 MILLION PER YEAR, MEANING THE PARAMOUNT ACCOUNTS FOR 5% OF ANNUAL LOCAL SPENDING.
