Organizations Filed Purposes: To promote the scientific study and conservation of Caribbean birds and their habitats.

Caribbean Waterbird Census and Conservation - Our Caribbean Waterbird Census and Conservation Program seeks to increase awareness and stewardship of waterbirds and their habitats through a coordinated regional census, trainings and small grants for monitoring waterbirds (i.e., ducks, shorebirds, other wetland birds). In 2019, our work included an international training workshop in Puerto Rico, a region-wide site assessment exercise for the Atlantic Flyway Shorebird Initiative, and many associated small grants to address the threats at waterbird sites. The year 2019 was also notable for the official reopening of the restored Ashton Lagoon on Union Island in the Transboundary Grenadines.

International Conference - Every other year, BirdsCaribbean organizes the only regional-scale conference dedicated to birds and their conservation. "Keeping Birds Aloft!" was the inspirational theme of our 22nd BirdsCaribbean International Conference held in July 2019. Over 250 delegates from 34 countries met in Le Gosier, Guadeloupe for a lively, productive and thought-provoking meeting. Keynote speakers, workshops and brainstorming sessions helped participants plan how to engage their communities, combat wildlife trafficking, and address the varied environmental threats facing the Caribbean and its birds.

Sustainable Harvest - Our Sustainable Harvest Program currently focuses on the threat of over-harvest to shorebirds. Shorebirds present a conservation challenge since despite their long-distance international migrations and generally poor population status, they are legally harvested in some Caribbean countries. In 2019, we worked to increase awareness and capacity to conserve shorebirds through specific training for harvest managers (ID of birds in the bag), analysis of harvest, education of hunters and advocacy for improved regulation on Guadeloupe and Barbados.
